These are the first three Shannara series gems that Terry Brooks wrote. I first read them more than 40 years ago. I've periodically reread the hardcopies over the years, but the originals have gotten rather worn and I decided that I'd buy the Kindle version. I love these stories and as far as I can tell, the Kindle version is the same as the originals. The only difference is that the original hardcopies had some sketches that aren't in the kindle trilogy. I did like the sketches, but the electronic version is very convenient and I can still look at the sketches in my old copies.Terry Brooks is my favorite living author. If you read and enjoy the trilogy you'll probably be hooked on the entire series.One word of warning. These stories are very different from the TV series. I like the TV series too, but the stories are entirely different. The personality of the characters sometimes share the same name but little else.Some very important book characters are missing entirely from the series and vice versa. I very much prefer the stories in the book, but like I indicated, the TV series is good too.
I came to fantasy reading a few years ago and have been devouring the genre ever since. I am now going back to the classics to see what I missed out on 20 years ago. This is a great trilogy! Classic coming of age and epic hero plot with all the usual cast of characters; gnomes, elves, dwarfs, men, strange creepy creatures and much more. People fall into rivers, smite fearsome opponents and everything is great fun. Wish I had found this decades ago, but never to late for a good read!
This is three books in one: the first books written about Shannara, who is a person from the past not a country. When I originally read the second book, "The Elfstones of Shannara" I was disappointed, now I can't figure out why. The stories are good with some unexpected twists and I quite enjoyed the book. I believe these were the first novels Terry Brooks wrote, and he himself says in the introductions that he was still learning his craft when he wrote them; he learned very well. If you like Terry Brooks, or the history of Shannara, or even just enjoy fantasy, get this book.
This was the 3rd time of reading this series for me. I read the series when they first came out and really enjoyed them then. They made of television series about the books a couple of years ago and so that got me interested in reading the books again. The books are so much better then the series. There really is no comparison. The story takes place in the future after a major cataclysm has changed life as we know it on earth. From the human race has sprung up the races of Trolls, Dwarves , and Gnomes and a few other minor races. The elves have come back out of hiding to join them. Magic has been rediscovered. With that involves a challenge as there is great evil that has arisen as well. Luckily there are also good men and under the direction of Allanon the last of the Druids, they band together to thwart that evil.
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy books: elves, dwarfs, demons, all are in here. Though he gave their characteristics a different twist from the norm. They were familiar, but changed also...an effect of man's influence I guess you could say. The only slightly issue I had was in the 3rd book, about the end of the middle. It didn't hold my interest as much as the rest of the writing, but this could have just been me personally as well. I'm definitely going to be looking into Brooks' other writing! (As a side note, if you have watched the TV show, the story line is waaaay different from the books, I'm mean WAY different. Some things completely opposite. While it is not a bad show, do not even think you know the story going into the reading cause you will be confused and possibly disappointed. But as usual, the books are better! Haha.)
The Sword of Shannara was one of the first fantasy books that I read as a kid. It's a fun adventure, in the same genre as The Hobbit, but a little less thick on descriptive detail. The second book, Elfstones of Shannara, run in the same vein, perhaps scaling up the action a bit to keep the sequel feeling fresh. Wishsong takes a new turn that feels a little out of character compared to the first two books, but is still a good read. Each of the books has new protagonists - the children or grandchildren of the protagonists in the previous book. They are all epic fantasy novels, written in an engaging style, with plenty of imagination to set them apart from other fantasy in the genre.
There are the best part of the Shannara series! I didn't realize this product was all three book in one giant book, but it was still easy enough to read from one giant book.The stories are fun and enjoyable to read. Way better than the TV series, if you were wondering.
I am a bit confused about writing any review on this book as I just could not finish it. Also I felt the whole time that this was rather a young adult kind of story and ... well I am not part of the age group. I read well into the first book and basically I could tell what will happen on the next page. The world as it is described, the beings populating this world are nicely written but this alone was not enough to finish. Maybe I will take the power one day to go back and read the whole story and - hopefully - will change my rating.
