An intriguing book on the subject of libraries. The author first talks about the history of libraries, in Alexandria, China, Rome, and of course England and the US. He talks about types: should a library be "universal" or dedicated for a purpose? Then he talks about the opposite, the deliberate hiding or destruction of books in Imperial China, Nazi Germany, and the pre-Civil-Rights south. An especially interesting section is on the "geniza", a sort of junkyard of old books used in societies where the destruction of a book was taboo; a thousand-year-old geniza can yield vast information for a 21st century archaeologist. My only complaint is that the book is not comprehensive: the author focuses on topics that interest him. Thus a long section on China but nothing concerning India or Japan. He likewise tells us a lot about a control freak named Melvil Dewey ( of Dewey-Decimal fame) but says nothing about Andrew Carnegie's sponsoring of public libraries. The things he does talk about are fascinating.

Matthew Battles packs a lot of intellectual history between these slim covers. As he notes in his introduction, a comprehensive history of libraries could fill volumes. He does provide, however, a survey of the key points in their evolution. His focus is on the changing role of the library as an intellectual institution, and he explains how someone who shapes a gathering of books, through the selections she makes and the manner of their presentation, is really the author of that collection. One of the more disquieting themes concerns the library as a target, both in wartime and in peace. The enemy, too often, has not been the Nazis or other enemies of thought; many times it has been someone who at first glance, would be assumed to be a friend of intellectual freedom, but in reality was seeking to contain and control it. It was disheartening to read of the destruction of truly irreplacable collections through the ages; yet the ultimate message, despite continuing challenges, seems to be one of the ultimate triumph of the book as a vessel for ideas and the library as a sanctuary for them.Battles works at the rare book library at Harvard, and his passion for books and the life of the mind is evident throughout this well-written volume. A most worthwhile and stimulating read!

This important and useful book surveys libraries over 4500 years and 5 continents, from a consistent but dynamic perspective. This helps tactically by demonstrating how the 21st century tension between the views of libraries as collections of books or as digitized, Internet-wide materials has played out cyclically over at least 500 years in struggles over who gets to participate, and to be heard, in politics and culture. Borges, a librarian before becoming the great 20th century author, is aptly presented up front as a guide to the tour, reprising Dante's Virgil.

Battle has written a book about libraries -so, about books put toguether and creating a new, chemical reaction- that has a non very common feature in this class of books: direction. Most of the books about books or related issues tends to be just catalogues of anecdotes, information, curiosities and sometimes even trivia. That's not bad. It can be very entertainning. But Battle has done more than that. With an excellent sense of style and elegance, -but also with a very hidden sense of humor titilating almost out of sight here and there- always sugestive and often very penetrating, he offer a clear vision not just of histories about libraries, but the History about relationships between the Library as institution and the ideas about it that have been developped in different phases of cultural history. The multifacetic substance of the library is presented, then, as never before and in no way just in the stratosphere of theory and speculation, but taking the reader to specific places and libraries, people and events, tragedies and personalities, bookmen and burning books-men.Great reading.

Am going to visit Leuven after reading this book! A fascinating book woven together by a rivetting storyteller. I've reread it several times; it's hard to shelve it for good! Absolutely gripping reading. An Unquiet History manages to cover a great expanse of time without becoming vague and generic, and without becoming too dense for the lay reader. The bibliography is super, too, and a well for more reading on the topic.I absolutely love this book and highly recommend it.

A great read for history buffs and especially those interested in the great libraries throughout history. I was never bored.

My studies fantastic book to read

A wonderful read... The author has a ease with his subject and a entertaining style that makes it a joy delve into.

Just awesome! Impeccable writing? Check. Humour? Check. Good plot with everything coming together at the end even though not always in the favour of the characters? Check.I like how there is nothing that makes you think: "Hey! That couldn't happen to Y because then X would just swoop in and do this or that." You know what I mean?Instead everything that is laid out at the beginning fits with everything else in the end, like: "No, X had to go to that other place in order to that thing that let to the incident that shaped the circumstances for Y. Making it completely natural that Y gets out of a certain predicament with the help of this and that". This is not a weird retelling of events from the book. I am just trying to explain myself and doing a horrible job at it. :S :PSome spoilers ahoy!In addition to being awesome, this book also tries to teach us/kids that people are usually bad for a reason and that they can be good if given the chance, and it does a wonderful job of it, if somewhat sad. I never thought I would cheer for Snotlout. And feel so sorry for him. And MISS him, even.I can really recommend this book, along with all the others in the series, of course.

This series of books has been a hit with my 6 year old grandson (and me). We are working our way through the entire collection about the boyhood of the famous Viking Hiccup and his friends and dragons. Vivid characters, sometimes crude and a little violent, the stories are creative, suspenseful and exciting. Although they are stand alone stories with flashbacks and background, it is far more fun to start with Book 1 and work your way through the series. Even the drawings done by the author are terrific. Yes Vikings can be ugly and it beats the beautified and sanitized version of books one and two Disney did. Hats off toe Cowell.

My 10 year old son and I LOVE this series! I can honestly say that in all my years of reading and reviewing hundreds of books, this series is in my all time favorites. Rarely do I come across adult books, that even begin to compare to character development and story lines that these books do! Cressida Cowell, I know that you are writting the last book in the series right now, but please come out with more book quickly! I live for the days when your books are released and I am so sad once I am done, knowing I will have to wait to experience such splendor again.

Great price for a great series! Looked around and couldn't say no to this great deal. Just know this is a paperback box set of books 1-9 and there are 3 more books after. (The last coming out end of 2015) Bought for a 10 year old, but my husband and I have been reading it and enjoying the story. Easy fun adventure read. One of the must have series for us on the shelf next to Redwall & Narnia.

I am not very happy that lately a few of my packages have been arriving later than I was told they would come but I am glad to have this book all the same.I'm only ready the first few chapters and already that has me hooked for more. It makes me sad to know there is only one last book left before the series comes to an end but I am happy to have been through the ride and discovering such a fun and heartwarming book series. If it weren't for these books we wouldn't even have the fantastic film series DreamWorks has been making so thanks to Cressdia Cowell (and Hiccup) for giving us the grand adventures both on paper and on the silver screen.

It is sometimes a challenge to find books for my son to read that are of interest to boys! He has read all the books and would read more if there were more. The books hold his interest and even give fun trivia information about the world of training dragons!

...but Cressida Cowell can do it! I have read and purchased every single one of her Dragon series books, including the imports and special titles not easily available in the United States, and I have loved them all! They just keep getting better and better, and that's not an easy task for an author. In fact, the very first book in the dragon series (How to Train Your Dragon) was my LEAST favorite! If you have read Cressida's other dragon books: look for more of your favorite characters, some really funny scenes with Fishlegs, Stoick the Vast, and Big-Boobied Bertha. You'll see some favorite old villains and get to accompany Hiccup on a journey to find "America." You'll meet some new characters and a frightening sea dragon (there is such an AWESOME picture of him on the front cover!!). You see Hiccup really grow up a lot in this story, and his true bravery shines through stronger than ever.If you have never read Cressida's books or only read a few: there is some crude humor here, farting jokes, booby jokes, so if that kind of thing offends you or your child, you might want to think twice. The sea dragon is described in scary detail, including its immense size and shooting poison from its mouth, so if you plan to read this to a youngster who might get nightmares, it might not be the best choice. And as always, I recommend reading her books in order, so start with the first one and read your way up to this one. But remember, out of all of her books, I found the first to be my least favorite, and I'm not really sure why that is.Last fact to know is that this is an import and it's paperback. I prefer buying her books in hardcover to add to my collection, but I couldn't wait for this one! Being an import, it contains some British slang and spelling that U.S. children might not understand at first, but nothing that would interfere with the story.I am an elementary school teacher and have read Cressida's stories aloud to my 2nd graders. If your child is too young to read this on his own, it will make a wonderful read aloud, too.

I really wanted to read this story, because my husband and I have been on the Pilgrims' Way in France and Spain. This might be a really good story, but it is marred throughout by poor style, grammar, syntax, and even spelling. When you want to red-line every page, it's time to close the book and read something else. Where was the Editor?? WAS there an Editor????For readers disappointed by this book: Read something, anything, by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson, especially A Walk In The Woods and English and How It Got That Way. Also read On Trails by Robert Moor On Trails: An Exploration.

Having walked the Camino myself I was expecting more about the Camino not about the author. There are brief glances about the Camino history and towns but more about him, people - mainly women - and food. Walking the Camino and not entering the Cathedral seems anticlimactic and choosing to highlight that The Parador made him feel like a leper when they gave him free food is juvenile. The only wise words were his epiphany that it was the journey not the destination that matters - not original.Read it if you want a personal journal detailing blisters, places he spent the night- no names given - and his personal relationships.

Foskett is wanderlust and admits it. He loves to walk distances, to see what’s out there and to tell the world about it. He walked around 1600 Kilometers in about 3 to 4 months. He really wasn’t in any hurry to finish this hike. (He took extra days off now and then during his hike.) He wanted to find the perfect walk and The Camino fit right into the distance and time frame it would take to finish. As he said most pilgrims start at Saint Jean Pied de Port in France, cross immediately over the Pyrenees into Spain and finish the hike in Santiago de Compostela at the Cathedral of St. James. Fosett’s route was longer and he would walk one half the total distance through France before crossing over to the Spanish portion of the walk. His actual starting point was Le Puy en Velay, France.Like all other hikers, he gave himself a nickname: Foozie. Women on the Trail flocked to him. He was never in want of a hiking companion. In fact, females clamored to hike with him, even for just one day. And, he never discouraged the attention. LOL. As a single guy, he certainly had his share of fun. You will enjoy the book. At times it is hilariously funny. At other times, you may wonder whether he will ever arrive at the Santiago destination, or even wants to finish his original quest. You will learn to relax, unwind, and go with the flow, just like Foskett did. Oh, and I should tell you he did get blisters on his feet, just like every other hiker. Eventually, he was told how to turn those blisters into hardened callouses – and it worked. Yes, he got lost once or twice on the trail, but managed to either find his way back to the trail markers or go forward and let his instincts correctly find the path again. There was one time at the last of his trip when he hiked way ahead of his female companion who never caught up to him. That seemed to be a scary time for Foskett. I almost think he thought his companion had deserted him. However, with frantic backtracking he managed to find his companion in a bar enjoying life – not concerned about him, at all. Interesting! Not all Camino travelers walk the extra distance to Finisterre. They don’t seem to connect this hallowed ground with the Saint and the Cathedral. A day or so later, Foskett, with his companion, returned to the beach outside Finisterre and stood on the ground the ancients considered to be “the ends of the earth” and looked out over the Atlantic Ocean. You will have to read the book to know Foskett’s final thoughts .Foskett said his next hike would be the Pacific Coast Trail, PCT, which starts from Campo, CA, near the Mexican border, to Canada. Most hikers who attempt the trail drop out because it is such a challenge. I won’t continue reading about this hike since I am still enamored with Cheryl Strayed’s book, Wild. However, if he decides to hike the AT (Appalachian Trail) at some future date and writes about his experience, I will be with him on his journey as an armchair travel companion.I am curious to know how, and if, Foskett will continue his Camino style of hiking since the majority of thru hikers on the AT are men who set a fast pace to complete the course before winter sets in. Also, there are no youth/hiker hostels on the AT, only open shelters, if you get to one before it fills up, as I read in other accounts. Also, a hiker has to leave the trail and drop down into a nearby town, maybe some miles out of the way, in order to get a nightly hot shower, mail call, and resupplying food essentials. This may be a problem for Foskett. He is a good writer who hikes with his head up looking at his surroundings. He hears the tractor in the neighboring field, sees the flowers along the roadside, feels the wind rushing around his body and lets the reader know how the rain feels when it peppers his face. I love how he sets up the scene through which he is hiking. I have even earmarked chapter #12 in order to re-read his descriptive passages. Is he an uncommon hiker/writer? Yes, I think so, and that’s why I will continue to read his books.

I don't even remember where I first heard about El Camino de Santiago, but I did. Being naturally curious, I started doing some searches on it and came across Mr. Foskett's book. There's a big difference between reading about something in a Wikipedia article and reading somebody's first-hand experiences about something - so I chose to purchase Mr. Foskett's reasonably-priced book. The book doesn't try to do too much (and I wasn't expecting too much from some guy with a nickname of "Fozzie", to be honest!). It's about a hike, a trail, a person (and the people he meets along the way), and what the experience did for him. There are no pre-planned adventures, not much of a plot, no need to create characters (the trail tends to do that without any help). It's just about some guy hitting the trail to see what happens, then writing about his experiences. And as the saying goes, life (or is it "truth"?) is stranger than fiction. It also makes for a wonderful book.

This was my first experience reading Mr. Foskett's boot. I became so wrapped up in the story, the wonderful characters and beautiful descriptions of the territories and challenges he faced during his trek. When I finished the book I was truly able to understand why people so want to participate in this adventure. While an entry in my bucket list, I know I will probably never experience this thrill. But I can now imagine what it would be like.Since finishing this book, I quickly acquired his other trail books and have never been disappointed. Keep writing Keith, your words and insights allow many of us to dream that we were there with you.

I thought this book would be more informative for cruising but it's mostly informative for living in a dock and buying boats to live in a dock. If living in a dock is what you want then this is the book for you but if actually sailing your boat is what you want then this is not the book for you.

This book provided an interesting level of insight from an author who lives aboard his boat but also appears to have and otherwise "normal" life in that he has a job and is not a sailing gypsy, not that there is anything wrong with living that dream, but it is not available to many of us. Thus this book fully met my expectations of many of the realities of living aboard a sailboat. While some tet is repeated apparently I suppose since many of the chapters were written at different times and then composed into a book. Still I found the topic interesting enough to get through the entire book in just a few days of spare time reading. I would strongly suggest anyone preparing themselves for this lifestyle change read this book. It is not how to prepare your boat for blue water sailing as there are books for that, but how to prepare yourself and your boat for the adjustment to living aboard a very small space. I did find it eye-opening to realize all of the possessions one has accumulated in their lives might have to be disposed of permanently or transferred into a more space efficient medium. Clearly something to reckon with before you sell your house! Overall a good and worthwhile read.! I am happy to have purchased the book and had the opportunity to share the perspective the author provided.

This is a must read for anyone contemplating living aboard a boat. Living aboard includes those wishing to do the Great Loop(you will be living aboard for 9 months afterall). However, this is not a cruising guide to doing the loop. It is a comprehensive book that I suspect everyone will take something from dealing with the boat buying process starting with common sense thoughts about what you want vs what you need, the importance of using a broker, financing, costs of operation and the whole buying process. If you are considering doing the loop or just living aboard (read, the same thing) this is where you should begin. Many have criticized the author for talking about Boston too much. In all fairness, it is well written citing real experiences and Boston is where his boat is! I would no expect him to write about Marathon if he has never lived aboard there. His cold weather principles are sound and should be helpfulI am getting closer and closer to my loop target age and I am reading and re-reading many books that will be helpful in my decisions. I highly recommend adding this to your must read list. The author seems intelligent, yet not arrogant and the book is well laid out as well as written.

This is more of a resource for living on board in a marina. We are cruisers, so much of the information didn't apply to our situation.

Great and very helpful book. I like what he writes...makes a lot of sense. He says, "Boats grow on trees." Yes, there is always a better deal out there; so never worry about not finding your special boat. I learned much from reading this book. I would recommend it to other boaters who may be thinking about living on their much loved boats.

This book is destined for people who wants to live aboard....not sailing....just to make sure that you get the point . There is a lot of comparison in therm of prices and things you must know when you are thinking of living aboard. What is included what is not, what you should get and so on.It's very interesting...The boat of the authors mark Nicholas the Morning Fog is actually at the Monty's bay marina in NY on Champlain lake.... The name of the boat is still there......in june 2017

This is a unique work on an unusual topic and it is full of information that will benefit me greatly. The author brings topics through in a manner that resonates in his own voice and personality. He is so full of common sense and integrity. He focuses on a myriad of topics and espouses a need for responsibility and equity. Very well delivered and so interesting that it was a pleasure reading.

This book discusses a lot of topics relating to living aboard but there is nothing really enlightening to anyone who has been around boating for a few years. After reading the entire book, I maybe learned one or two things. Unless you are a novice when is comes to boating, I would skip this book. On the other hand, if you are a novice, this is a must read. It also has some good informations for living aboard in snowy climites but I suspect the audience for that type of info is very limited.

They Said It Couldn't Be Done: The '69 Mets, New York City, and the Most Astounding Season in Baseball History, by Wayne Coffey

Review

"They Said It Couldn’t Be Done brilliantly brings an iconic baseball season to life, providing fresh insight into big names such as Gil Hodges and Tom Seaver as well as to some of the lesser-known players in that epic summer, such as Al Weis and J.C. Martin. The book is a must-read for not just for Mets fans, but all baseball fans who will appreciate what indeed was the most astounding season in baseball history."—KEN ROSENTHAL, two-time Sports Emmy winner for Outstanding Sports Reporter"In 1969, while much of the world was transfixed by Neil Armstrong's 'one small step,' Queens was experiencing its own giant leap—a leap of faith with its baseball orange-and-blue. Wayne Coffey has always had his finger on the pulse of New York City and its sports, and his take on the 1969 Mets proves it. If you want to know what it was like to live and witness a baseball miracle in tumultuous times, this book is for you."—RON DARLING, former New York Mets all-star and bestselling author of Game 7, 1986“Having lived through the Mets’ 1969 World Championship in real time and re-lived it for fifty years, I thought  I knew all I needed to know about my boyhood heroes, but in They Said it Couldn’t be Done Wayne Coffey has unearthed some fresh gems; most poignantly those involving the personal backgrounds of many of that wonderful team’s players. Wayne has done a marvelous job of allowing us to relive that epochal event through a fresh prism. This is simply a great read.”—HOWIE ROSE, New York Mets broadcaster

THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE, by Wayne Coffey, details how the 1969 New York Mets came together and then chronicles their march through the playoffs and then game by game how they won the World Series. The book touches on personal stories of many of the players and coaches along with painting a picture of the baseball scene and the world events to really make the reader feel like they were in New York City in 1969 pulling for the Mets. Very analytical, and still relatable and fun, Coffey details how baseball was in New York City. Major League teams had recently left, there was a war in Vietnam, and their were lingering racial tensions that still affected everyday life. Coffey explains how the team was formed, from drafting and signing players, to obtaining their beloved manager, Gil Hodges, and Coffey explains how each person was integral to the success of the team. Coffey explains how Hodges' managerial belief was that all 25 men on the roster are important and each one a key to winning the World Series. As a baseball fan who likes to watch it and read about it, the most unique and interesting part of the book is the ongoing theme that while this team was nicknamed "The Miracle Mets", Coffey writes the entire book from the standpoint that nothing was miracle about this team, that each player had his purpose and was put in a position to succeed by the team and manager. Coffey does allow that the World Series win from a still young franchise was quite remarkable, but that using the world miracle could bring a negative connotation that the team played beyond its means. Coffey's approach to the book is very rooted in the idea that this team was put together logically and worked hard to fulfill everyone's dream of winning it all. I finished this book with a smile and I am still thinking about how well-written and inspiring THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE was. A really good sports non-fiction and one I would recommend to just about anyone. Thank you to Crown Publishing, Wayne Coffey, and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

So I always like these "deep dive" books that revel in taking a reader through all the tiny details and nuance of some big event that we're familiar with, but without the deeper knowledge. This was a good example of the genre, and is a fun recreation of the long ago Mets Series win. It is amazing how long ago it is.I'm not a Mets fan, myself, but I like these books. You don't need to be a Mets fan, you just need to appreciate baseball and the ins and outs of all the swings that happen during games. It was a little hagiographic - everybody is bigger than life and the flaws are glossed over. It very much reads like a newspaper story extended over 300 pages, with the usual melodramatic one sentence paragraphs - "He knew his moment had arrived." Stuff like that. So that got a little much at times. And I would have appreciated more of a cultural study - there's a little mention of John Lindsay, but NYC itself in 1969 isn't really examined. The focus is about 75 percent on the playoffs and Series, so it's not about the season itself as much as the title push.I doubt the book broke much new ground as far as that goes, but since I had never read about the 1969 Series with any depth before, this was all new to me. It was interesting and fun, and any old-time baseball fan would find something to enjoy. Good gift book.

When I saw this book, I had to get it! As a long time Met fan, I remember the '69 world series vividly. This book brought back those memories! I couldn't put it down!I enjoyed the detail that the writer included, along with the backstories of many of the players. Lots of things I didn't know. The writer's descriptions were powerful, and I felt like I was experiencing each play all over again.I really enjoyed this book, and I'm sorry that I finished it so quickly. Thanks you to the author for a fantastic book and great memories!

Where this book truly excels is in the detailed information and histories of all of the '69 Mets players. That information was very interesting and fun to read, especially if you grew up with that team as your hometown team. But I had a hard time with this book as an overall story. Although the writing style was quite nice, the story was not told from any specific point-of-view which made for little to hold the narrative together in a particularly compelling manner. There was a ton of detail where there didn't need to be, particularly in the minutiae that went into describing all of the games. It would have been a far more interesting if, instead, the story included the changes in fortunes of those involved with the Mets, as well as the fairly profound impact it had on the city and how, coupled with the successful seasons of the Jets and Knicks, was almost all anyone in the trig-state area talked about.Although this was a review copy, there was no mention of photos being included in the final book. Photos would not only have been appreciated, but would have gone a long way in helping bring this book to life. The bottom line is that I thought the author missed a great opportunity to paint the broader picture of how the '69 Mets impacted the social fabric of the city as a whole. That season came at a remarkable time in the history of the city and it is one which made a profound impact on just about everyone who was there to experience it, as few sports events have.

Coffey achieves the difficult...telling a story that you already know the ending of in a way that preserves the excitement and surprise. I could almost smell the Shea Stadium turf and taste the hotdogs. To put it in perspective, I'm a retired Submarine Officer. This is the first book I've read since "The Hunt for Red October" that I couldn't put down.
