All of those topics and more are explored in this excellent book on a high school football team by Kostya Kennedy.The book takes the reader through the 2014 football season of New Rochelle High School, a New York City suburban school district. The area is a melting pot of all levels of affluence, of various races and various family dynamics. The football program, led by coach Lou DiRienzo, is one of the more successful teams for many years. The players are proud to be wearing the Huguenots jersey and many come back to visit.One of these former players, Ray Rice, came back to visit during that 2014 season when he was the flashpoint of the issue of domestic violence in professional football. This section of the book was a good example of the main characteristic of this book that I thought made it an excellent read: it was fair, free of inflammatory talking points and explained the issue in a thorough manner.Concerns about player safety and concussions are also explored from the point of view of coaches, players and parents. The culture of the game will make players not want to suggest that anything is wrong with them physically. There is concussion treatment protocol that all teams must follow, but it relies on player self-reporting, Because of this, according to a quote in the book, “There may be as many concussions that go unrecognized as go recognized on the football field.” But as to WHY this is the case – the culture of the game – is explained quite well through the book.Kennedy does address the question most often posed to parents – would he let his son play football? By following the season of a successful high school football team, he explains his position in a manner that will make any person think about his or her perspective of the sport. This is done not only in the last chapter when he addresses the question directly, but in each previous chapter when Kennedy captures the spirit, the drive and the passion these young men have for the game of football and the school. This book was so good. Abit "shallow" of a 101 book but its meant to be used as a sampler. I have been a Wiccan for 5 years and too well read for the book but i am sucker for hardcover books. The artwork inside looks like water color, and its a hardcover with no dust jacket so you dont have to worry about a dust jacket getting ruined over time if your someone who re-reads alot or uses these types of books as refs. Would totally rec as a first book IF your going the Wicca or modern witch practice, this book probably isnt for the traditional witch as its more Wiccanized than most i have talked to would like.

This is more like a beautiful coffee table book - not something I would actually recommend to anyone interested in the occult, metaphysics or spell work. It covers all the big subjects but so briefly that it would only be useful if you have 0 to no knowledge of the subject. Even then, it doesn't give you quite enough to get off the ground. I get it, these subjects are big and it is a 'beginner's book', but this felt like it was just cashing in on the "witchy" trend with some cute illustrations. Maybe for a tween this could be a fun "teaser" kind of book?Honestly it's a little embarrassing to have on the shelf next to other, more robust "beginner's books".

I am new to spirituality/all things witchy. This book has been so helpful to teach me the basics. I highly recommend it to anyone! The illustrations are gorgeous, and it’s a great resource.

As someone eager to learn more about healing and spirituality, this book is perfect for me. My favorite part so far is Part 3: Casual Clairvoyance because the dream interpretation section is fabulous. This book is beautiful inside and out! I have a lot of spellbooks now and even more books on chakras, horoscopes and palmistry but I wanted this book simply because it was pretty.I took off one star because the whole book only contained like 6 spells.

This is a great beginner book, which is what I needed. I had the most basic witchy knowledge, and the internet is vast (and often unreliable) plus I'm a sucker for a good hardcover book. I like that there is no dust jacket, because I feel I'll be referencing this book a lot along my journey. I would highly recommend this book for beginner witches or Wiccans; not only is the knowledge easy to read and retain, the illustrations of the book are divine.

I encounter a variety of emergent - and several not-so-emergent conditions - as a matter of routine and understanding them can lead to prevention, improving others' health and decreasing my own workload.Not so much here. A mass shooting or other active violence incident is a personal fear of mine; yet there is precious little that I can do to genuinely prevent them. Understanding statistics helps (but the data is rough; think p values < 0.5...), but does little to mitigate the problem. Planning helps, but as Von Moltke the Elder said, "no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force."A PhD candidate for Homeland Security recommended this text as a point-of-reference for understanding not just the mass violence perpetrator, but more specifically, the school shooter. Lang's work moves beyond the cliched "socially isolated victim retaliates" model and instead identifies crucial clinical features that, predicated with the specific circumstances for each shooter, led to the outbreak of a mass violence event at a school.Langman's work arrives at a critical conclusion - each of these shooters experienced signs and symptoms of mental illness. Some of them could have been treated - and in fact, multiple shooters were - but the absence of closely monitored care and appropriate support structures in the overall healthcare picture meant that too little was communicated too late. Further compounding these events is a phenomena known as "leakage" - specific, targeted, actionable threats known to other students in advance that were not relayed to the authorities. Hundreds of lives have been lost that could have been saved.Mass violence - be it shooting, stabbing, vehicular homicide, explosives - has a broad array of causal factors ranging from socioeconomic circumstances to geopolitics to the quality and availability of healthcare. Attempting to blame any one cause fails to assign responsibility ultimately to the individuals committing the act and detracts from understanding why they deemed mass violence as the appropriate outlet.Langman's work presents a strong analysis of the psychological states of several well-known shooters and contextualizes not only the events, but the shooters' lives leading up to them. Based on local reviews from co-workers, Langman's insight into the minds of troubled children is a welcome view into an otherwise-inaccessible combination of psychology and clinical development.This is not a bible. This is not a solution, or profile, or magic totem to prevent school shootings. It is, however, a warning - and one that may very well save lives.

An excellent resource for us to return to and a reminder that we aren't using past lessons already learned to ensure our children's safety. Relies on textual analysis to diagnose a set of school shooters at a distance and make observations about their differences and commonalities. This exercise is tenuous from a scientific perspective, but still useful in identifying personality and circumstance clusters in which threats develop within individual students. The main takeaway is the complexity of the student shooter and the importance of telescoping out to find effective prevention measures. The measures Dr. Langman suggests leave responsibility with not just teachers and administrators, but also communities, local businesses, state and local lawmakers, and most importantly students and parents.

What an emotional workout this book was! It took me two weeks to get through it. It was both important and very disturbing. Frankly I had no idea some children could have so many mental-health and emotional problems. It seems I have lived a sheltered life. They hear voices, they fear see demons, they suspect they are not human. This is shocking stuff.The author cherry-picks his case studies. He focuses on ten children who shot up their schools. He uses these cases to classify the killers into three groups. Each has their own characteristics.Now I feel I have some idea how a school shooting, or a mass killing works. Idealization, preparation and then execution. I now understand there are often warning signs. Forget teachers with guns. Forget metal detectors. What we need is the ability to know our troubled children and to help them. How the heck can a student tell people he hear voices or that he is planning an attack and then nothing happen?Well worth your time.

This was a really good book to read because the author went into great depths explaining that this “science “ of trying to understand and maybe prevent future kids from these incidents. There is not an exact, hard-fast and simple way to understand the “why”of these incidents. Because there isn’t a simple answer or a cause and affect theory, sadly, don’t look for these incidents to stop any time soon. The “why” is as numerous as there are school shooters. This is a different world then when I was growing up 60 years ago. I think the best we can do is to be involved in your child’s life. Know what’s happening, be a part of their life.

The author provides a review of the 10 most sensational case studies of school massacres at the home of the publication. The same point comes across that these perpetrators all had serious psychological problems, some seemed very obvious, with four defined as psychopaths. Unique that these mass murders typically did not happen in urban environments where you would think there would be a greater likelihood due to availability of hand guns and the association with a greater potential violent environment but most were in suburb or rural environments. I would have preferred more discussion of a larger number of violent acts to get an even greater perception why these ill individuals act to cause such gross harm. The distressing theme seems to be that these individuals go unnoticed or at least unreported even if there behavior would seem to trigger attention. Ironically, one of the Columbine killers who was a psychopath was also an accomplished liar that even his probation officer thought he was a reformed or decent kid. The writings of a number of the individuals is very chilling and provides a picture of the individuals and how they feel about their peers. Certainly underlines the need for schools and universities to have great assessment teams and in VA. Tech's case, they redeveloped their own threat assessment program that they published called 'Implementing Behavior Threat Assessments on Campus'.
