A must read.

I'm posting this two years after reading The China Study and what subsequently followed was radically changing into beimg nearly 95% of the time vegan all the time. This book was a game changer for me. If you find the book hard to follow or understand, buy the audio version because I think you will find it's easier to understand and follow. As a engineer and scientist, I followed up and read some of Campbell's journal papers. I was stunned by the findings enough to have a paradigm shift in what I would choose to eat forever more. Like a smoker that quits a bad habit overnight, I did the same with what I ate. No more fast food, added sugar, junk, cows milk, etc. I dumped the western diet and my 50yr habit of what I ate since birth to simply eating...plants. Whole, organic plants is my food of choice. Over a period of 6 months I lost about 52 pounds, my weight dropped from 224 to 172, being 5ft 8in male, this was noticeable to all I new. Seeing is believing. My blood screening numbers are all normal except for B12 and Vit D were found to be low; so I take supplements for only those two things and feel fantastic. Im going on to my 3rd yr now after reading this book and changing to whole plants I feel like I did when I was in grade school with energy and skip in my step. Im writing this with the hope that it gives someone inspiration that they (you) too can do it too. Never being a gym person, I've recently begun to add modest exercise 1 or 2x per week in the past 6 months which makes me feel additionally very good after a 45 min workout. But absolutely, the biggest bang for my my health and feeing good comes most definitely in what I choose to eat. Don't get me wrong, I love chicken wings, cheeseburgers, fries, cookies, cake and pie, but they don't love me. I'd say 90% of what's in a supermarket and 95% of most restaurant menus in the US wont meet a true whole foods, plant based diet. If I were to give advice as to where to start, I would suggest after reading the China Study two things: theres a retired Dr. Esselstyn from the Cleveland Clinic that had a simple breakfast cereal he made at home. My version of it goes like this: 1-1.5 cups of raw oatmeal, sliced fresh strawberries, blueberries, figs, dates, rasins, prunes, add fresh blackberries and/or raspberries or whatever fruit you want. Add ground flax seed and chia seed. Add a sliced banana or two. Add unsweetened and unflavored almond milk. Stir the almond milk so it gets mixed in the raw oats. Wait 5 min then eat. Its very filling. I use all organic produce and oats now to avoid pesticides. The other thing I do is make 2-liters of green smoothies and drink it all throughout my day. I change up the frozen fruit in the smoothie (I'll use frozen mangos, pineapple, strawberries...for leafy green I may use a combo of baby spinach, kale, chard); here is an example of a smoothie I made today: 3 cups baby spinach, 1.5 cups of frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries), 2 apples, 2 pears, ground flax seed and chia seeds, 2 bananas, 2fl-oz of almond milk+2fl-oz of spring water. Blend. Makes 2 liters. Strongly recommend using a blender like a breville "the boss" (i use this and like it alot, sticker shock on price so get ready) or blendtec. After making the smoothie, take two to three large containers of the smoothie with u to work and drink this all through the day. Carry one of these containers with you around the office or in meetings like its you're new coffee mug. Lol. I dumped milk and dairy, and check the labels...I absoultely won't eat anything with added sugar. For dinner, I started out using the "big salad" recipe that can be found at chrisbeatcancer.com In two weeks of consisitent eating whole plant based diet, I began to notice the change and feel better overall; the positive change in two weeks kept me going, week after week, month after month. Dont let people put doubts in your mind. If I can do it, you can do it too if you want it. I hope my note is helpful.

-There is a mountain of scientific evidence to show that the healthiest diet you can possibly consume is a high carbohydrate diet.-The past 60 years have been a celebration of chemicals and technology instead of diet and prevention. So we don’t die from heart disease as often, but we still get it at about the same rates. Those who have bypass surgery do not have fewer heart attacks than those who do not.-Calcium builds strong bones, but cow’s milk weakens them, as osteoporosis. Americans, Australians and New Zealanders drink the most milk, and have the most bone fractures from middle age on.-One of the biggest health hoaxes in history is the nutrient supplement industry.-The health damage from doctors’ ignorance of nutrition is astounding.Welcome back to The China Study, still straight-shooting, still dramatic, and about 70 pages longer in the new edition. This book provides more training in the health effects of food than MDs get in all their years of education. The clinical studies, the case histories and the science are all here in plain, direct language. It is a very hard book to put down. The facts, usually contrary to everything we’ve been taught, keep coming fast and hard. The reason the facts are contrary is of course because of the usual suspects: Big Ag, Big Pharma and Big Processors. They have corrupted our universities with grants, infiltrated government agencies to keep the truth at bay, and spend billions advertising their false promises. We grow up with their falsehoods, and we believe in them. Those who try to speak out are isolated, shunned, removed and fired. It is all examined in you-are-there detail, because it all happened to Colin Campbell and other (once) highly-regarded doctors he profiles.Campbell’s basic premise is that animal protein destroys our internal ecosystem. A Whole Food, Plant-Based diet not only maintains better health, it can even reverse damage. The scientific proof is endless – and so are the defenders of the SAD – Standard American Diet - that is about one third animal, between meat and dairy. When I read the first China Study ten years ago, I immediately went back online and ordered a whole case of them. I then mailed them out to friends all over, preceded by an e-mail warning and my review. That’s how impressed I was. This second edition forced me to reread it. In so doing, I came across several strong new claims and rushed to the first edition, only to find they were already there. So this edition is as much a badly needed refresher as a new discovery. Glad they made me do it.David Wineberg

I bought this book along with David Einhorn's ( Fooling Some of the People All of the Time, A Long Short (and Now Complete) Story, Updated with New Epilogue ) which is very similar in the storyline and end result.I thought this book was presented much better and I found myself more immersed in it than with Einhorn's. I was fighting to get through Einhorn's book, while I found myself wanting to read more of this one.All that being said, what Ackman did was tremendous - truly a David vs. Goliath task. However, as much respect as I have for Ackman and what he did and accomplished - as I read the book, I found myself questioning "Did Ackman simply uncover what was going on and made money being right"? or "Did Ackman actually cause the series of events to take place which caused the collapse of MBIA and other insurers after years of pitching his story"? It's sort of the same kind of thing that Dick Fuld brings up when discussing Lehman and Hank Greenberg discussing AIG...would the events which took place and the ultimate demise have happened on their own had short sellers and some of the nefarious actors not done what they did? Or would business have just continued as it always had? Though each of the companies did have problems, I'm not so sure that they would not have been able to muddle through...I believe it was with the added pressure applied by folks like Ackman and Einhorn that undermined public confidence in these companies that ultimately threw them into turmoil. Of course the financial crisis threw gasoline into the fire, but again, had public confidence not been undermined, perhaps they would have been able to raise additional money, righted their ships, and continued? The fact that MBIA is still in business today makes you really ask these questions. How could MBIA still be in business if what they were offering provided no benefit to the purchasers of municipal bond insurance and was simply added cost to taxpayers? Is there business really so different today?Today, MBIA does $1B in revenues while carrying $9B in debt - however, they are posting decent/strong earnings - $1.81/share over trailing 12 months with a stock price at $6.00. Ackman called for MBIA to go to bankruptcy, and it still has not happened...even after everything which has taken place.

This book came out in late April, and the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Financial Times have all ignored it.The lack of attention is a shame, because it's an amazing, amazing book.Hedge fund manager William Ackman gave author Christine Richard impressive access. She writes, "Ackman gave me a CD-ROM containing every e-mail he had written or received that mentioned MBIA as well as years of appointment calendars and access to an office filled with more than 40 boxes of documents he'd collected in researching MBIA. He encouraged colleagues, advisers, and friends to talk with me and spent hours answering my questions."The result is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes look at how a "short" investor uses the press, stock analysts, and the government to beat down the price of a stock he has bet against.Mr. Ackman's campaign that is at the heart of this book is his war against Municipal Bond Insurance Association, or MBIA.Here the key journalist seems not to have been anyone at the New York Times, or even Ms. Richard, who worked for Dow Jones and Bloomberg. No, it was "Marty Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the New Republic magazine, who had been Ackman's thesis adviser when he was an undergraduate at Harvard."Mr. Peretz, reports Ms. Richard became the first investor in Mr. Ackman's hedge fund after Mr. Ackman "drove from Boston to Peretz's summer house on Cape Cod to pitch him the idea." (Mr. Peretz tells me the investment was $500,000, made at the time and not subsequently increased.)By Ms. Richard's account, Mr. Peretz wasn't exactly what you'd call a passive investor. After the SEC didn't really follow up on a meeting in which Mr. Ackman aired his allegations about MBIA to SEC staff, Mr. Peretz wrote in July 2004 to the chairman of the SEC, William Donaldson, "with whom he was friendly." Reports Ms. Richard, "Peretz's appeal stirred a response at the SEC, which asked Ackman to return to Washington."If the SEC did not act against MBIA, Mr. Ackman would try another regulator, the attorney general of New York, Eliot Spitzer. Ms. Richard reports that in January or February 2005: "Ackman, along with Marty Peretz, and Eliot Spitzer were huddled around a small table in the attorney general's office, eating pressed turkey sandwiches. Peretz had arranged the lunch meeting. Ackman wanted to point Spitzer toward the important issues at MBIA."If Mr. Spitzer and the SEC both did not act, there was always the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank. The book recounts Mr. Ackman and his lawyer flying to Boston on June 5, 2007 for a meeting with Congressman Frank, with whom they visited only after they "picked up Marty Peretz, who knew Frank from their student days at Harvard." Mr. Frank agreed to hold hearings on MBIA.There's plenty of other rich detail here. The broker who gave Mr. Ackman the idea to short MBIA worked for, of all places, Lehman Brothers. The dependent relationships among short-sellers, regulators, and the press are illuminated for all to see. At one point, Mr. Ackman asks an SEC official what it would take to get the agency to act. The SEC official's reply? "A story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, especially the New York Times."What to make of the whole episode? Well, it's certainly a newsworthy tale, and not only for those interested in hedge funds or short-selling. One MBIA vehicle named something like Latin for "black hole," Ms. Richard reports, "owned liens on 11,000 properties in Pittsburgh, nearly 10 percent of the entire city."As an investment idea, shorting MBIA was a big success. The shares lost more than 80% of their value. "Pershing Square investors made about $1.1 billion," Ms. Richard reports. About $140 million of that was Mr. Ackman's personally, though, Ms. Richard reports, he has pledged the entire amount to charity. Those troubled by Mr. Ackman's use of the regulators to press his position at least have to concede that MBIA and its allies also used the regulators to press their own case against Mr. Ackman, subjecting him to SEC and New York attorney general inquiries that were eventually dropped. While Ms. Richard's book is finished, the story isn't over. Some value investors are now placing bets on an MBIA recovery. And short-sellers are circling the for-profit education industry using the same strategy of press and regulatory pressure that was deployed so successfully against both Farmer Mac and MBIA.

This book was, literally, “50 years in the making”. 2019 will bring the Annual Philadelphia Folk Fest (the LONGEST continuing music festival in North America ) to its 58th year. Just after the landmark 50th anniversary, volunteer festival photographers Eric Ring Jayne Toohey and John Lupton decided there should be an illustrated history of the festival to explain the founding to those who discovered it in the new Millennium and bring back memories for those – like me – who have been attending since the early 1970s.. It was not an easy task. They combed the thousands of photos in the PFF archives and contacted about 25 photographers to see what they had to share. I will admit that I was one of the 25 and 21 of my photos from 1970-73 are in the book. Because the sale of the book benefits the Philadelphia Folk Song Society – which organizes the Festival – I donated my images (as dis all the others) and I do not share in any proceeds from the book. With that said, I’ll be objective and say that there are, literally, hundreds (maybe even 1,000) photos of folk music legends that you won’t find elsewhere. The book has 256 pages chock full of photos and weighs in at a hefty FOUR POUNDS! There are color and black and white photos. And there is text too, provided by co-authors Lupton and Ring (Ring did the interviews). There is a great interview with now-retired Philly folk deejay icon Gene Shay who was the MC for the first 55 years! I learned stories even I never knew – including the night Bob Dylan showed up “to watch from the hill”. There are groupings by major artist and a section about the unusual campers (the campground is a city in itself for four days.)See the brief "amateur" video I've attached to this review to show some of the layout. There is a listing by year of which artist performed. To be honest, we wish there was an index of the photos by artist but with the time it would take the book – already two years delayed – would not have been available in time for the 2018 festival. So if you’ve EVER attended the Philly Folk Fest (or even wanted to) I can highly recommend this book. It is published by Schiffer, the well-known family publisher that does an amazing job on high-quality Antique, Art and Collectibles books. If you are just a folkie, look over the description to see just “some” of the performers who are included. And, if you buy this book, you’ll find yourself pulling it out often as you play your favorite “folk artist”.Most of the photographers (like me) are still “shooting” the festival but with the work involved I can’t see a similar volume being produced in the next 50 years!I hope you found this book both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographic”

This is a stunningly beautiful, well written, excellently produced work of love celebrating 50 years of the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Plenty of excellent photographs and blurbs on individual performers. Lists of performers through the years is worth the price all by itself. Like "DeadBase" for the folk inclined. 255 pages of marvelous. Great gift for the Folk music fan. I bought mine for myself.

Purchased this book at the Philadelphia Folk festival this past year. Beautiful photography and writing. A great resource for all things folk music. And specifically as it pertains to Philadelphia.
