I just finished this book. I also had a shot of rum, a shot of amaretto, and a glass of red wine, so let's see how this review goes! All in all I hated this book. Okay, it wasn't that bad. The more I think of this book, the more I can see the good qualities. Let's start with the good. This is a book about sadness. Sadness sells! Look at Toni Morrison and Amy Tan. Both authors sell books of sadness. Perhaps Plascencia is too in your face though. He uses the word 'sadness' over and over. Way to be discreet! There is magical realism. That sounds like a super interesting topic. We have our world and we have magic! Woohoo! When you think about it, the magic in the book is like the magic in the Bible: plagues, resurrections, creation of a new race. The People of Paper is heavily inspired by the Bible. Unfortunately, it feels just weird. People who burn their flesh with kerosene so they stop peeing in bed? People who grabs bees and purposefully sting themselves to remove depression? So weird...And that's not even the weirdest part! People decide to war against the planet Saturn! It makes no sense! How do you war against a planet? I do not understand...Perhaps this is allegory, and you have to be profound to get it. Unfortunately I am not getting it. Yes, I know who Saturn is. The book reveals it halfway through. But I still feel like the war is pointless. Is that the point? The pointlessness of war? If so...The book just made a very large circle to make that point...All in all I hated it. Okay...I didn't hate it, but The People of Paper is a solid 3 stars. It was okay. Parts were funny, parts were tedious, parts were creative, and parts made zero sense. Perhaps I am simply not a fan of Plascencia's writing style. I do not regret reading it, but I probably would not have finished it if it weren't the book chosen for our book club.Oh yeah! This is the 8th book of our book club.

This is a defiant novel. It defies standard form. It defies standard plot. And the characters even defy the novelist when they develop an antagonistic relationship with Plascencia and his role in their lives. If this sounds odd, it is. This is a very odd book. But here's the thing: this novel also defies any expectation you might bring to it. It can be classified as post-modern as it is full of self-reference, but where so many post-modern novels feel cold and distant, THE PEOPLE OF THE PAPER is full of warmth and deep emotion. Plascencia weaves the fantastic with the absurd with the humorous with the heartfelt to create a portrayal of the human condition that is at once universal and unique.I read this novel seven years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. Indeed, it has haunted me, its imagery and emotional heft coming back to me again and again. I read a lot of novels but few have such a lasting effect. I don't know of a higher praise for a book.

This, in some sense, is storytelling about storytelling, and the result is absolutely lovely--I can't say much more than that without feeling liking I'm giving too much away.I will, however, leave you with two things:(1) At one point in the novel, The People of Paper is described as "the war on omniscient narration (a.k.a. the war against the commodification of sadness)" which I thought was fitting.(2) It takes some of the modern style (that others would call "gimmicks") employed by the likes of Dave Eggers in A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Jonathan Safran Foer in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Movie Tie-In): A Novel to a whole new level. If you thought those were gimmicky, avoid this altogether.

he People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia is a novel that is in no way easy to categorize. According to Plascencia, the novel is “a war-novel, a memoir, it’s about immigration, it’s a meta-fiction, and it’s a love-story.” The heart of the novel is built around Federico de la Fe and his daughter, Little Merced, who leave Mexico for the United States after Federico’s wife, Merced, leaves him. Once in the U.S., Federico bands together with the locals, forming a group called the EMF who wage a war “against Saturn, against sadness, and against omniscient narration.” The novel is written in three sections, each including several chapters. Each chapter enlists the perspectives of a variety of characters, including Saturn, the omniscient narrator. The pages are laid out in columns, and, at one point, words are blacked out or, in certain editions, are cut from the page. The narrator himself makes an appearance as well. Weird in plot, characterization, genre, organization, and style, I cannot think of a book stranger and more exciting than The People of Paper.

What an amazing book, but what sadness I feel knowing that a lot of people (not of paper but of meat) will never be exposed to it. It is this feeling what often takes me from thinking 'this is a good book' all the way to 'this is excellent.' The genres it is usually catalogued under run from Latin to Experimental, but I'm here to say that it should just be under Excellent Fiction. The author has a creative genius that transcends geography and time and returns the novel to what it should be, something new and fresh - the word novel should, after all, stand for something. All the praises to this book, one that I'll be happy to recommend to anyone looking for original literary and emotional research.

I love Plascencia's metafictive writing style. His approach is so different from the traditional metafiction and so less, for lack of a better word, douchy. His imagination is wild and creative and bold. His sense of culture both American and Mexican and Mexican-American (Chicano) is steep and he is able to give a history, anthropology and sociology class all in a few hundred pages. Not to mention his stimulation of all the senses keeps you interested throughout the book. My only regret was not buying the hardcopy version, as it has actual pages with cut out sections and neat intricacies that the paperback version lacks. All in all, a great read for anyone who is trying to find inspiration into their own imagination.

Superb book. This is a careful, very detailed dissection of all of the arguments for a society to allow development of the kind of extreme distribution of wealth the U.S. has allowed to occur over the past 35 or so years--since Reagan instituted policies designed to wreck our economy and basically destroy the nation. That may sound harsh, but the truth is no nation can survive concentrating tremendous wealth in the hands of a very small portion of the population. That might have worked 200 years ago, but it cannot work in a modern society. The Great Depression should have proven that, and did to every knowledgable, thinking person. The only people who believe the lies being perpetrated by the plutocracy are their paid mouthpieces and the ignorant (meaning lacking knowledge, not stupidity) people duped by their lies.

Well, how do I persuade EVERYONE on the planet to read this book? Stiglitz wrote a wonderful little piece in Vanity Fair back in 2011, entitled "of the 1%, by the 1% and for the 1%". About . . . the 1%. He succinctly summarized there what he wonderfully explains here. See if you can find the article: http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2011/05/toponepercent201105. This book is an expansion of that. The wonderful thing about Stiglitz, besides his Nobel Prize in economics, is that he writes very well, he cites a ton of examples, and he refers to studies and facts in abundance, but with a simple clarity. He is also very much aware of something called "behavioral economics". If you don't know what that is - look it up. Another Nobel prize winner, Daniel Kahnneman, in a book called Thinking, Fast and Slow, clearly explained that when it comes to economic decisions, we are definitely NOT rational animals. Any theoretical approach to how economics SHOULD work is doomed. We don't actually operate that way.Stiglitz takes the most recent history, casts the economic thought back to the founders - Adam Smith and others - and explains clearly the path of perdition that we are upon. You may think an unequal society is not a good idea, not fair, not whatever. What you need to grasp that it is a very dangerous way to run a society - VERY dangerous. We are destroying our own efficiency and productivity by this mindless path of downsizing government, reducing taxes, and failing to invest in ourselves - in our children, our infrastructure, our health, etc. Economics is not that complicated. If you take wealth OUT - rent seeking - we all lose. We only all gain if you invest in us, ourselves, our infrastructure. Taking wealth out is a lose / lose.It is a as clear as a bell to me - but HOW on earth can we get the balance of our citizenry and our elected wonks to understand this? They are not rational about elections either. So READ THIS, please. And see if you can't get a few others to do the same. We owe it to the kids and grandkids. This way evil lurks.

This is s wonderfully accessible grounding in contemporary economics theory, with numerous examples drawn from near-current American experience. It explains the concepts of inequity and its sources in the very structures of our laws and economic objectives. Like the old adage has it, "Nobody votes himself out of office," and this certainly applies to the 1 percent monied class in the US. The regressive income taxation formulas, the inheritance tax system, and the tight circle of 'good old boys' pretty much insures that the wealthiest and their families will stay that way, while the 99 percent continues to be misled by second-rank politicians and media pundits who convince many that this is the system that works in our best interest as well. Careful study of this text will give readers the information they need to unveil the conspiracy of inequality that holds the vast majority of us in confused passivity. Sanders, Warren, and Cortez are not the "second-rank politicians" referred to above, but the numerous millionaires who warm the seats of Congress promising us "pie tomorrow" are the ones to watch-out for. Follow these three campaigns in the light of what this book teaches you about how inequality in the opportunity to earn, to learn, and to revise the political system we have inherited has led to the moral and social impoverishment under which the 99 percent lives today.

This, much like Robert Reich's books, is an excellent description and explanation of our macroeconomic policy failings over the last 30 years or so. Whereas Reich's focus much on historical anecdotes of past policies, their successes or failings and how they match with today's policies, this book is more academic in nature, moving back and forth between economic theory and economic reality. Both reveal that our true national debt problems are due to a lack of revenue rather than overspending because it is a lack of spending that causes recessions in the first place. The economy produces more than it consumes and the lack of demand is due to the unequal distribution of wealth and this problem will only be exacerbated by policies that do nothing but move wealth to the already wealthy. While neither Stiglitz or Reich are overtly politically partisan in their writings, focusing mostly on objective facts, both also do make it quite clear that it has been largely the policies of the political right that have created much of the problems that we face today. Overall, this is a great read for anyone interested in the nitty gritty details of macroeconomic policy and how they have misused (purposely or not) or misunderstood leaving us in the situation at present.

I really appreciate the author, a Nobel economist willing to speak out. Unfortunately, this is the kind of book I have trouble reading because I become too angry to go on. It is a story that hundreds of millions of clue-less Americans need to hear, however. When, Dear Lord, can we "Move On" from the "Churches of the Republican Way"? (That's my sentiments, not the authors. But, really! I'm 72 years old, been protesting all my life, and just now the choice of the majority of white American Christians just effed us all AGAIN in their latest tax "overhaul".

Page 33: Well, my thoughts....I cannot believe how much knowledge is in the first 33 pages. I knew negativity hurt, but I did not realize it causes brain damage. I feel humbled by the fact that I am changing my mind about negativity and embracing positive notions.Hostile Language can cause brain damage. Thanks Mark Robert Waldman for pointing this out...

It changed me in quiet but meaningful ways. It exposes the thornier aspects of one’s way of relating to self and the world. What you need to know is all in the first 2-3 chapters, which is not a negative, since it delivers to those who may not have the patience for a whole book, even one as slim as this. But the rest of the chapters detail how to put the principles into practice. And that separates the casual reader from the one who is really committed to change.

This book will change your life--if you practice what it says, which is difficult because habits are so ingrained. Did you know your brain goes into panic when it hears "no?" The age old debate over whether language shapes what we know really doesn't matter because it clearly shapes how our brains function and ultimately affects our psychological and physical well being. This is a book the entire world should read because it paves a path to a more compassionate, understanding, and civilized humanity. Many thanks to Newberg and Waldman for their years of dedicated research. (I also highly recommend How God Changes Your Brain.)

This is not the kind of book one can read and just put away. It requires a lot of practice to see results, total immersion in its teachings, and a lot of personal self-knowledge and reflection. I am still practicing many of its recommendations, and I am very glad that I have this book. I have only one concern, though. It seems to assume that facial and social expressions of emotional states are universal. That has not been my experience. I've lived in this country for more than 50 years, and I am still finding instances of miscommunication due to different cultural assumptions, gestures, mannerisms, etc., that go beyond words. I would love to see a follow up study on those differences, since I know that they run very deep, are very much unconscious, and in a pluralistic society such as ours, they can create a lot of miscommunication. For example, I recently attended a memorial service for a friend. Her family was there, as well as a large number of friends. I became very aware of feeling a very uncomfortable sense of coldness, especially when I people praise the strength of the family. I realized I was operating from a different cultural milieu, where we expect grief to be out in the open, and out of conscious control. I had to change my cultural filters in order to understand their frame of mind and not let my own deep-seated values create the wrong impression on my mind. A book on those issues would be very interesting and would complement this one very well.

Just learning the importance of framing differently can make a profound change in your own thinking. Once you're aware of the power of your own words you'll know that even if the person you're dealing with isn't interested in understanding you or resolving the issues, you have done your best to be genuine and no longer have to beat up on yourself. You're thinking will be clearer in all your decisions and you can actually start to live a more positive life.

This was just what I needed. My original battery got to the point where it had to be on the charger almost all the time. I replaced out the battery and now it works like new. With that being said, compared to other baby monitors, this one does have a much shorter battery life. My little one takes 2 naps a day and I also use it a little bit in the morning and a little bit at night before I go to bed. I have to charge it at least twice.

Great book! It's educational, it should look like a college book, write in it, take notes, highlight and bookmark the book to death and it will work wonders in your life whether for business or personal! If you implement any part of this book it will change everything
