Winner of the 2012 Fifty Books/Fifty Covers show, organized by Design Observer in association with AIGA and Designers & Books Winner of the 2014 Type Directors Club Communication Design Award Praise for Penguin Drop Caps: "[Penguin Drop Caps] convey a sense of nostalgia for the tactility and aesthetic power of a physical book and for a centuries-old tradition of beautiful lettering."--Fast Company "Vibrant, minimalist new typographic covers.... Bonus points for the heartening gender balance of the initial selections."--Maria Popova, Brain Pickings "The Penguin Drop Caps series is a great example of the power of design. Why buy these particular classics when there are less expensive, even free editions of Great Expectations? Because they're beautiful objects. Paul Buckley and Jessica Hische's fresh approach to the literary classics reduces the design down to typography and color. Each cover is foil-stamped with a cleverly illustrated letterform that reveals an element of the story. Jane Austen's A (Pride and Prejudice) is formed by opulent peacock feathers and Charlotte Bronte's B (Jane Eyre) is surrounded by flames. The complete set forms a rainbow spectrum prettier than anything else on your bookshelf."--Rex Bonomelli, The New York Times "Drool-inducing."--Flavorwire "Classic reads in stunning covers--your book club will be dying."--Redbook

About the Author

In the 1960s, especially in the United States, the novels of Hermann Hesse were widely embraced by young readers who found in his protagonists a reflection of their own search for meaning in a troubled world. Hesse’s rich allusions to world mythologies, especially those of Asia, and his persistent theme of the individual striving for integrity in opposition to received opinions and mass culture appealed to a generation in upheaval and in search of renewed values.Born in southern Germany in 1877, Hesse came from a family of missionaries, scholars, and writers with strong ties to India. This early exposure to the philosophies and religions of Asia—filtered and interpreted by thinkers thoroughly steeped in the intellectual traditions and currents of modern Europe—provided Hesse with some of the most pervasive elements in his short stories and novels, especially Siddhartha (1922) and Journey to the East (1932).Hesse concentrated on writing poetry as a young man, but his first successful book was a novel,Peter Camenzind (1904). The income it brought permitted him to settle with his wife in rural Switzerland and write full-time. By the start of World War I in 1914, Hesse had produced several more novels and had begun to write the considerable number of book reviews and articles that made him a strong influence on the literary culture of his time.During the war, Hesse was actively involved in relief efforts. Depression, criticism for his pacifist views, and a series of personal crises—combined with what he referred to as the “war psychosis” of his times—led Hesse to undergo psychoanalysis with J. B. Lang, a student of Carl Jung. Out of these years came Demian (1919), a novel whose main character is torn between the orderliness of bourgeois existence and the turbulent and enticing world of sensual experience. This dichotomy is prominent in Hesse’s subsequent novels, including Siddhartha (1922), Steppenwolf (1927), and Narcissus and Goldmund (1930). Hesse worked on his magnum opus, The Glass Bead Game (1943), for twelve years. This novel was specifically cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. Hesse died at his home in Switzerland in 1962.Calling his life a series of “crises and new beginnings,” Hesse clearly saw his writing as a direct reflection of his personal development and his protagonists as representing stages in his own evolution. In the 1950s, Hesse described the dominant theme of his work: “From Camenzind to Steppenwolf and Josef Knecht [protagonist of The Glass Bead Game], they can all be interpreted as a defense (sometimes also as an SOS) of the personality, of the individual self.” Joachim Neugroschel has won three PEN translation awards and the French-American translation prize. He has also translated Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs, both for Penguin Classics. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.Ralph Freedman, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, is acclaimed for his biographies Hermann Hesse: Pilgrim of Crisis, and Life of a Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke

If only this Kindle Edition preserved the translation enjoyed in print edition, it would be a wonderful read. But, it has been badly conveyed with phrasing that destroys much of the beauty of this classic work. An excellent author's turn of phrase, is preserved by an accomplished translator; this 'rendition' does not improve the text by its use of English simplifications and re-phrasings of the original literature. It is a disservice to anyone whom thinks they are reading Hesse.Object lesson: you get what you pay for -- I wish I'd gotten the (Buddha cover art) version, that appears to be same as paperback I've well read for decades: that superior version is also available as Kindle Edition, by Hermann Hesse (Author), Hilda Rosner (Translator). Next time I'll compare 'sample' with a known edition to avoid spending even very little money on something with damaged literary quality.Siddhartha

I just finished reading Siddhartha, and I can safely say without a shadow of a doubt, that it is now my favourite book. It's simply amazing that this was published in 1922, it is a timeless breath of simplicity and creativity. Herman Hesse was known for writing semi autobiographical novels, and this one is no exception; the character Siddhartha is even recognised for his writing ability at one stage of the novel. Siddhartha is heavily influenced by Hesse's close relationship with the great Swisse psychologist Carl Jung, and it is a treat to experience the archetypal imagery that Hesse manages to bring to life with sheer mastery. The novel reads like an old mythic tale, told with simple descriptive prose, and playful dialogue: the characters even refer to themselves in the third person! While reading Siddhartha, I couldn't help but picture the novel's world as being hand drawn, like the old drawings of the Buddha and the Hindu and Buddhist mythologies of old. The book is divided into three parts, which symbolically follow Siddhartha's birth, death, and rebirth. The Siddhartha in the novel is not related to the Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), but he exists in the same time as him, and the two cross paths in the book. Even though they are unrelated, and the story hasn't much to do with the Buddha, the novel implies that the Buddha exists everywhere and in everyone and is merely a representation of the enlightenment available to anyone, at any moment. Whether it be at the moment of physical death, sickness, wealth, sadness, or simply holding and looking at a rock, one is capable of `waking up' and seeing the inter connectedness of everything.I won't elaborate any further on the book, I would hate to subtract any of your enjoyment out of reading it yourself, and if you haven't, I urge you to. One important thing to consider before reading it however, (it is a fairly short read - roughly 80 pages) is the translation. The original was written in German, so the translation of the book can make or break it. Some translations are really poor, while others capture the essence of the novel beautifully and gracefully, like a net catches a butterfly before releasing it into the wind. Below is a extract of the book, spanning all (or at least most) of the English translations available to you, to help you choose the right version for you. I've ordered them in order of best to worst, though you might have a different opinion to me.SIDDHARTHA ENGLISH TRANSLATION COMPARISON:Dover Thrift, introduction, translation and glossary of Indian terms by Stanley Appelbaum (1998)Instructed by the samana elder, Siddhartha practiced denial of self; he practiced concentration in accordance with new samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest - and Siddhartha absorbed the heron into his soul; he flew over forest and mountain, he was the heron, he ate fish, he hungered with a heron's hunger, he spoke with a heron's croaking, he died a heron's death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy riverbank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the carcass; he was a dead jackal, he lay on the sand, he swelled up, stank, rotted, was torn apart by hyenas, was skinned by vultures, became a skeleton, turned to dust, blew away into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned; it had died, it had rotted, it had fallen into dust, it had tasted the dismal intoxication of the cycle of existences; filled with fresh thirst, like a hunter it was awaiting the gap through which it might escape the cycle, where causation would come to an end, where sorrowless eternity began. He mortified his senses, he mortified his power to remember, he stole out of his ego and into a thousand unfamiliar forms of creation; he was an animal, he was a carcass, he was stone, he was wood, he was water, and each time, upon awakening, he found himself again; the sun or the moon was shining; he was himself once again, he was moving through the cycle; he felt thirst, overcame his thirst, felt fresh thirst.Modern Library, a translation by Susan Bernofsky, foreword by Tom Robbins, translator's preface (2006)Instructed by the eldest of the Samanas, Siddhartha practiced the eradication of ego, practiced samadhi according to new Samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha received the heron into his soul, flew over forests and mountains, was heron, ate fish, felt the pangs of heron hunger, spoke in heron squawks, died heron death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the corpse, was dead jackal, lay on the beach, grew bloated, stank, decayed, was torn apart by hyenas and flayed by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, blew into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned, it had died, had decayed, become dust, it had tasted the bleak euphoria of the cyclical journey, and then, freshly thirsty, it waited crouching like a hunter for the gap in the cycle where escape was possible, where the end of causality began, an eternity free of sorrow. He killed off his senses, he killed off his memory, he slipped from his Self to enter a thousand new shapes, was animal, was cadaver, was stone, was wood, was water, and each time he awakened he found himself once more, the sun would be shining, or else the moon, and he was once more a Self oscillating in the cycle, he felt thirst, overcame the thirst, felt new thirst.Shambhala Classics, a translation by Sherab Chödzin Kohn, introduction by Paul W. Morris, translator's preface (1998).Taught by the eldest shramana, Siddhartha practiced self-abnegation, practiced meditative absorption according to the new instructions of the shramanas. A heron flew over the bamboo grove, and Siddhartha became one with the heron in his mind, flew over forest and mountain, became a heron, ate fish, hungered with a heron's hunger, spoke a heron's croaking languages, died a heron's death. There was a dead jackal lying on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's mind slipped into the carcass, became a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled up, stank, rotted, was torn to pieces by hyenas, flayed by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, blew about in the fields. And Siddhartha's mind returned, dead, rotten, reduced to dust, having tasted the dark drunkenness of the cycle of existence. With a new craving it lay in wait like a hunter for the gap where that cycle could be escaped, where the end of causation could begin, eternity without suffering. He slipped out of his ego into a thousand alien forms, became a beast, carrion, became stone, wood, water--yet each time when he awoke he found himself there again. By sunshine or by moonlight, he was once again ego, was pressed back into the cycle, felt craving, overcame the craving, felt craving anew.Bantam Books, a translation by Hilda Rosner (1951). This translation is also available in a number of different editions from other publishers.Instructed by the eldest of the Samanas, Siddhartha practiced self-denial and meditation according to the Samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo wood and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over forest and mountains, became a heron, ate fishes, suffered heron hunger, used heron language, died a heron's death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy shore and Siddhartha's soul slipped into its corpse; he became a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled, stank, decayed, was dismembered by hyenas, was picked at by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, mingled with the atmosphere. And Siddhartha's soul returned, died, decayed, turned into dust, experienced the troubled course of the life cycle. He waited with new thirst like a hunter at a chasm where the life cycle ends, where there is an end to causes, where painless eternity begins. He killed his senses, he killed his memory, he slipped out of his Self in a thousand different forms. He was animal, carcass, stone, wood, water, and each time he reawakened. The sun or moon shone, he was again Self, swung into the life cycle, felt thirst, conquered thirst, felt new thirst.Penguin, a translation by Joachim Neugroschel, introduction by Ralph Freedman, translator's note (2002).Taught by the eldest of the samanas, Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over forests and mountains, was a heron, ate fish, hungered heron hunger, spoke heron croaking, died heron death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the cadaver, was a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled, stank, rotted, was shredded by hyenas, was skinned by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, wafted into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned, was dead, was rotted, was dispersed, had tasted the dismal drunkenness of the cycle of life, waited in new thirst like a hunter, waited for the gap through which he could escape the cycle, where the end of causes came, where painless eternity began. He killed his senses, he killed his memory, he slipped from his ego into a thousand different formations. He was animal, was carcass, was rock, was wood, was water, and he always found himself again upon awakening. Sun was shining or moon, he was self again, swinging in the cycle, felt thirst, overcame thirst, felt new thirst.Barnes & Noble Classics, a translation by Rika Lesser, introduction and notes by Robert A.F. Thurman (2007)Instructed by the eldest of the shramanas, Siddhartha practiced moving away from the self, practiced meditation, following new rules, the shramanas' rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over the forest and the mountains, was the heron, gobbled fish, hungered as a heron hungers, spoke heron croak, died the death of a heron. A dead jackal lay on the sandy shore, and Siddhartha's soul slid inside its corpse, became the dead jackal, lay on the strand, swelled up, stank, putrefied, was dismembered by the hyenas, skinned by vultures, became bones, dust, blew in open country. And Siddhartha's soul died, decayed, turned to dust, tasted the muddy rush of the cycle, waiting in new thirst like a hunter for the gap where the cycle would be escaped, where the end of causes, where eternity free of suffering would begin. He mortified his senses, he slew his memory, he slid out of his I into a thousand alien shapes, became beast, carrion, stone, wood, water, and found himself every time awakening again, in the light of the sun or the moon, again he was I, whirling around in the round, he felt thirst, conquered thirst, felt thirst anew.

Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha is an absolutely amazing and engrossing tale of one man’s journey to find that all-elusive idea of enlightenment. The book’s title may suggest that it is simply a story that would have value only for people of the Buddhist persuasion, but this simply is not true. The work is well written and thought out, and it does a terrific job of showing us as human beings that often times what we are looking for is with us all along.Hesse’s book follows a young man named Siddhartha on his journey to find the true meaning of life and peace. The young man leaves his family of Brahman priests believing that they have spiritually achieved all that they ever will, and embarks with his friend Govinda down the path of a contemplative and restrictive existence. The young man soon realizes that these religious men (Samanas) also are lacking, to Siddhartha, what the path to true enlightenment really is. He continues on his journey coming by entering the company of the real Buddha—Gatama, but soon comes into contradictions with the Buddha’s teaching of removing oneself from the world. This leaves the man frustrated and lost, and eschews him down another path that is quite opposite of the one he originally intended to take.Siddhartha has now become rather restless with his pursuit of happiness, so he soon discards it for one of sexuality, greed and total reliance on the flesh. He falls in love with Kamala—a beautiful courtesan woman—and embraces the life of a merchant that furthers his greed and lustful desires. Siddhartha and Kamala conceive a son soon after their affair, but after a dream leaves Siddhartha puzzled, he becomes bored and sickened by his lust and greed, and decides to move on to find his enlightened path. With total despair encompassing his heart and soul, Siddhartha comes to a river where he soon hears a unique sound that will change his life forever. This sound signals the true beginning of his new and fulfilled life--the beginning of earthly suffering, human rejection and inner peace, and, finally, ultimate wisdom and enlightenment. The book is a harrowing tale of man’s lust for greed, power, sex and material gain; however, its ultimate purpose is to show that often times what we are looking for is in the simplest places imaginable. Hesse’s work craftily explains (through Buddhist and Hindu philosophies) that life is an all-encompassing journey that will eventually show all mankind what it is looking for. We suffer and struggle mightily through banal everyday tasks, but perhaps this daily grind of being in a symbiotic relationship with other life is what inner peace really is.

About the Author

Greg Howard grew up near the coast of South Carolina, or as he fondly refers to it, “the armpit of the American South.” By the time he could afford professional therapy and medication, the damage had already been done. His hometown of Georgetown, South Carolina is known as the “Ghost Capital of the South,” (seriously…there’s a sign), and was always a great source of material for his overactive imagination. Raised in a staunchly religious home, Greg escaped into the arts: singing, playing piano, acting, writing songs, and making up stories. After running away to the bright lights and big city of Nashville, Tennessee with stars in his eyes and dreams of being the Dianne Warren of Music City, he took a job peddling CDs and has been a cog in the music business machine ever since. Now an adult with a brain, Greg finds the South Carolina coast to be a perfectly magical place where he vacations yearly and dreams of the day when he can return to write full time in the most tastefully decorated beach house on Pawleys Island. Currently, Greg resides in Nashville, TN with his husband, Steve, and their three rescued fur babies. Molly, Toby, and Riley.

“Evil is a relative term. Not all darkness is evil.”Greg Howard, a southern boy, apologizes to his small-town South Carolina roots by setting this action-packed vampire romance in the middle of it. This was really good. The writing is crisp, the story is engaging and well-paced, the characters are, given the level of fantasy here, believable and well rounded. Even the dead ones.Cooper Causey is a smart, pretty redhead. He’s going to grad school in Nashville and hooking up a lot. None of this seems unusual, at first, until we realize that Cooper’s keeping the world at an emotional distance with his behavior because of something terrifying that happened to him as a boy back in Georgetown, South Carolina. There is all the high-drama of a classic bodice-ripper here, spiced up with a fascinating twist on vampires with biblical overtones. The frightening afternoon adventure at Warfield Plantation is not the only thing keeping Cooper away from Georgetown. Teenage crushes and public humiliation lie in his past as well, and when Cooper rushes to his hometown to find out what has happened to his grandmother, he has to confront the men who once were his best friends.Cooper is kind of a jerk, and following his redemption as an emotionally mature human being is a story line that runs parallel to Cooper’s discovery of just how abnormal he really is. Folklore, long-standing family deceptions, and a threat to humanity itself lie hidden within the borders of the plantation where his childhood terrors were first given form. It is a breath-taking journey of discovery and acceptance.Greg Howard clearly has a sequel in mind. I hope he’s working on it now, because I’ll look forward to reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Filled with supernatural suspense, it reminded me of the early Anne Rice novels. I thought the main characters were interesting and I wanted them to succeed. With a background story, I had never heard of before it was a fresh take the genre. I hope there will be a sequel soon to see what happens next.

I loved this book and I love Cooper :) In fact, every character in this book is special. Howard is a wonderful writer. I highly suggest BLOOD DIVINE to those who appreciate a well-woven story with southern charm, various paranormal elements, adventure, and a sweet romance. Fans of True Blood will devour this book!

As the story opens, "20 years ago”, and the main character rides his bike down the long road of the abandoned, creepy plantation that is not so abandoned after all. I was hooked. The story scared me deep in my bones, touched my soul, and invited me to open my heart. Blood Divine is a memorable work where the characters lingers long after the story ends.It reads like classic paranormal/fantasy with a hint of romance and it's impossible to put it down. Blood Divine is an impressive first novel however you approach the story. Written with stunning originality and constructed with witty prose, Blood Divine is the novel we have been waiting for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I kept thinking I knew how it was going to end but did not expect what happened. I loved the characters and how the mythology was developed.

(Sadly) I finished Blood Divine this morning at 5:23. 11 hours later, I've yet to find adequate words to express how in love with this book and all of the characters... yes, all... I am. Ok, well, maybe not the, oh, I don't want to give anything away! Incredibly well written, completely new take on a very difficult subject(s) to undertake after the many, many attempts by others. A breath of fresh air. Anytime a book has me crying one minute and literally laughing out loud the next and wide-eyed in anticipation the whole way through... Bravo, Greg Howard! Bravo!!!!

Get this book! You will love it! The author is a childhood friend of mine and I am VERY proud of him! Ready to start reading his second novel!

Part ghost story, part vampire-lore, part Biblical mythology, with a healthy dose of Southern sass and charm mixed in for good measure. The cast of characters is vast, diverse, and fascinating, but the central and epic story never got lost. The setting descriptions are vivid and lush, especially if you're familiar with this part of the country. Bring on the sequel!!

This was a great book, in its time. However since OpenLDAP 2.4.20 or so the configuration system has changed drastically. The flat text file configuration covered in this book has been depreciated in favor of the OLC which is basically an LDAP directory hierarchy itself just for the configuration data. This new OLC method is significantly different enough that aside from some general information and command reference this book is basically useless with newer versions of OpenLDAP.

If you are new to network information management this this is not the book for you. If, however, you have some type of system administration background utilizing information management system such as Active Directory, NIS, NIS+, or even a baseline knowledge of LDAP then this book will help fill some of the gaps.LDAP System Administration starts with a brief review of LDAP in its incarnations and takes you quickly into the theory of distributed directory services. This book will work best if you some place where you can experiment with the commands a bit.The book does a good job of describing LDIF files which are a must for all but the most insignificant updates. Once you have an understanding of the commands, I suggest you get one of the graphical tools discussed in the book. These tools will allow you to import and export LDIF files and, in general, make your life a delight. If you are building your first distributed directory implementation, get one of the books on Unix system administration or the NIS/NFS system administration book.Though I bought the paper version of this book, I was happy to see a Kindle version available. I may still yet get the Kindle version but for now, the paper version is meeting my needs.

This excellent book covers implementing and administering LDAP better than any I have seen. It's apparent to me that a great deal of thought has gone into key paragraphs. Despite some comments to the contrary, the organization is methodical and logical. Throughout the book there are references to other sources to further research related topics.Chapter 1 LDAP is defined and you are pointed to the appropriate RFC's.Chapter 2 is an overview of the LDAPv3 and explains very well the format of the LDIF directory data/structure files. Incidentally, I found that this book enhanced my understanding of Microsofts Active Directory which encompasses among other things LDAPv3.Chapter 3 familiarizes you with the slapd.conf file and the example uses an SSHA hashed rootpw (an OpenSSL algorithm) and introduces you to the use of ACL's in this server config file.Chapter 4 leads you through building a company white pages using the command line (which you certainly should know how to do even if you are a GUI fan); the chapter concludes with a brief list of GUI editors for the faint of heart.Chapter 5 explains replicating to a backup LDAP server with slurpd, enhanced backups using generated LDIF files and distributing the directory to maximize network traffic efficiency. Additions, deletions and modifications to the database are illustrated. Searching is briefly, but concisely explained.Chapter 6 begins Part II, application integration. The Pluggable Authentication module pam_ldap and it's configuration file, ldap.conf are discussed and there is a list of ldap.conf parameters with explanations. Replacing NIS with LDAP is covered in this chapter. Chapter 6 ends with a brief overview of security mechanisms in LDAPv3.Chapter 7 presents LDAP as a directory storing email addresses and other contact information. Configuration examples for connection 4 popular email clients are included. Integration with 3 popular MTA's (postfix, sendmail and Exim) round out the chapter.Chapter 8 introduces integration of network services other than authentication and email with LDAP. Among other things, DNS, printing and Samba LDAP integration are discussed.Chapter 9 has a few valuable pointers in interoperability with other platforms, specifically Windows 2000 Active Directory. Digital certificates and Kerberos authentication on the Windows platform as relating to *nix are very briefly discussed.Chapter 10, Net::LDAP and Perl gives a mainly informational overview of connecting, binding and searching and contains sample scripts using the Net::LDAP module. It also demonstrates adding, updating and deleting entries using Perl scripts instead of the LDIF methods earlier in the book. Note, however that this is not a book about programming; it is a book about LDAP Administration.Lastly, this book does need an update. Some modules which were separate entities not so long ago are now symbolic links; for example: /usr/local/sbin/slapacl -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapadd -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapauth -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapcat -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapdn -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slapindex -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slappasswd -> slapd /usr/local/sbin/slaptest -> slapd Even the best needs to be updated; and when it is I will be one of the first to purchase it.LDAP protocol will very likely solve the complex problem of redundant authentication/authorization data spread across heterogenous networks. However, whether your users access resources through passwords or some other mechanism one thing stands out.If your security database resides in one place, it must be secured and precautions taken that authentication data traversing the network cannot be sniffed or otherwise compromised. In general, most admins accomplish this by encryption using SSH/SSH2 or OpenSSH.OpenSSH, in turn uses the encryption libraries of OpenSSL so it's a required dependency. To summarize, IMHO: LDAP is only 1 part of the solution and this book covers it better than any other I have seen. No single reference will cover all the bases and like any well written book this one keeps the focus on the major subject of LDAP, but offers references to other related topics.Above my workstation is a wooden shelf containing my most important references; this is one of them. I have found the following volumes very helpful and LDAP plays well with these technologies."LDAP System Administration" by Gerald Carter."SSH The Secure Shell, The Definitive Guide" by Daniel J. Barrett, Richard E. Silverman & Robert G. Byrnes."Network Security with OpenSSL" by John Viega, Matt Messier & Pravir Chandra."Kerberos: The Definitive Guide" by Jason GarmanThese 4 volumes will help you both in securing your network and making it more productive and accessable to authorized users. These volumes complement each other. If you need guidance for software development, you might try "Secure Programming Cookbook for C and C++" by John Viega and Matt MessierDefinitely Five stars - even though it does need updating. This book fills a knowledge void and can make your life a lot easier. It can save you hours of Google searches, searching forums, pumping your friends for tips, trial and error, and grep'ing log files; this one deserves a slot in your special library.

The author is obviously very knowledgeable on LDAP and walks the reader through the history of LDAP from X.500 to the present time. The author quotes RFCs and IETF drafts when necessary, since some standards were not in place at the time of writing. This book does focus on LDAPv3, but gives advice about migration from LDAPv2, if you are still stuck in the past. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to deploy LDAP. It is also the best Kindle-ready book available on the topic of LDAP. I bought this book because another LDAP book was not available on Kindle. I am pleased with that decision and do recommend this to any Kindle owners. There were a few table formatting issues on some pages, but they were minimal. THUMBS UP!

I am still reading this book and it does have alot of useful information for LDAP. Coming from the Windows world of administration is misleading as to what a directory service actully is. When I started I only envisioned using LDAP for account creation (Active Directory). I had no idea that the protocol was used for a wide array of solutions in complex I.T. configurations. Although the book is good it does not have a simple step by step guide for a beginer just wanting to set up a domain as easy as it is in windows. I Still reccomend the book as a great resource!

I usually love anything from O'Reilly and Associates publishers, but this book I purchased in Nov. 2013 Upon looking at the book the information is a bit outdated. The LDAP concepts are the same but the specific commands have not been updated in the edition I purchased. I had to go on-line to get the newer commands and associated arguments.

Nunca pasará de moda ldap

In "Fried and True: More than 50 Recipes for America's Best Fried Chicken and Sides" by Lee Brian Schrager with Adeena Sussman there's a little something for everyone!Really, who doesn't love fried chicken? This mouthwatering book is sure to appeal to cooks of all ages and expertise levels. The book begins with a chapter entitled "Fried Chicken 101" which is basically an introduction to cooking fried chicken. This is wonderful for someone like me, who has never made homemade chicken in her life! It explains the definitions of Brining, Deep Frying, Skillet Frying, and Seasonings as well as many other important necessities to get started with. It explains what tools you need at home to begin your deep frying experience! What I also thought was unique to this book, was an introduction on how to cut up your own chicken. The chicken recipes are put into one of three categories in the book: "Southern Inspiration", "American Originals", and "Pacific Rim Flavors". Each chapter focuses on that specific food foundation, unique with their own native spices and seasonings. The last chapter focuses on "Sandwiches, Wings, Li'l Bits, and Special Diets" including a gluten free fried chicken. This book really does include every kind of fried chicken you could ever want: Hattie B's Hot Chicken, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Coconut Fried Chicken, and General Tso's Chicken just to name a few. "Fried and True" also offers many side dish recipes that fried chicken lovers are sure to enjoy! Velvety Mashed Potatoes, Hash Brown Casserole, New Orleans-Style Vegetarian Red Beans and Rice, Tomato Pie, and Classic Buttermilk Biscuits! Doesn't that sound amazing? Maybe I just love a good southern dish!Either way, readers will not be disappointed in this cook book! The author has really done a terrific job of putting these recipes together and sharing little stories about how they came to be. I can't wait to try some of these out! I rate this book as 5 stars!I received this book for free from Blogging For Books in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.

It's crispy, juicy, succulent, tender and oh so good!!! I'm talking about fried chicken! Who doesn't love this classic quentissential american dish? Rolled in flour or bread crumb coating and spices and deep-fried to a golden brown! Eaten hot or cold alongside satisfying sides like mashed potatoes, stuffing, macaroni & cheese, corn, coleslaw or potato salad, or with biscuits and gravy? Portable provisions, this has become america's favorite finger food! For years, fried chicken has become a regional specialty- a favorite of the Southern United States. But it took a civil war, an industrial revolution, and one very cantankerous bearded gentleman (Colonel Harlan Sanders) to get fried chicken to strut north of the Mason-Dixon Line out of the southern kitchens, and beyond American shores! Bravo to authors Lee Brian Schrager and Adeena Sussman for writing this great cookbook! (I love reading the foreword by Whoopi Goldberg too!)I Only wished that they included fried chicken recipes from restaurants such as KFC and Church's. Being Filipino-American, I also enjoyed Max's of Manilla for their fried chicken too!

Love this book! The chef recipes are wonderful. I’ve combined several into my own customized technique. Chick to die for!! Can’t wait to keep cooking my way through this book.

This is a masterpiece of a presentation of the American Icon: Fried Chicken. Other fried chicken books have served well to focus on exceptional "back to the roots" recipes and cooking methods, but these folks have eclipsed them all with the personal stories, dedication, recipes and of the absolute love to produce fine fried chicken by those whose craft presently define the historical and present definition of what fried chicken is. It is their life and accomplishment and their contribution to the greatest meal ever made: Fried Chicken.

If you are a fan of Fried chicken, get this cookbook. I've learned valuable tips in this cookbook, that explained the why my Mom made chicken the way she did. Great recipes from around the country. Hattie's Hot Chicken is one my favorite recipes from this book.

This is the BEST BOOK EVER for frying really good chicken. I'd searched for decades for THE recipe to make southern fried chicken as I remember my Mom made it. This book has it and many other options that are bound to have one for your taste. The one I found best and used a technique I hadn't previously tried was from a restaurant in Harlem. If I recall correctly the chef was originally from Alabama. At any rate, it you're looking for a good fried chicken recipe, it's sure to be found in this book.

I will call simply the Frying Bible. So many different ways to fry a bird and the great sides that goes with them.

I LOVE this cook book! Not only is it filled with several different recipes for fried chicken, but its introductions to the chefs, their restaurants, and their philosophies make for fascinating reading. Even if you have no intention of ever frying a chicken, buy this book, curl up in your favorite chair, and enjoy the story of one of America's classic comfort foods.

FABULOUS! EASY TO READ. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME I READ OR HEARD THE WORD GRIBENES. I ADORE FRIED CHICKEN AND EVEN THOUGH I DON'T FOLLOW DIRECTIONS WELL, I HAVE COMBINED MANY OF THE INGREDIENTS LISTED IN SOME OF THE RECIPES, AND MY CHICKEN CAME OUT PRETTY GREAT!I LOVE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FOR THIS BOOK. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE BOOK. THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS. I WILL USE AND LOVE THIS BOOK FOR YEARS, AS I PERFECT THE ART OF FRYING CHICKEN.

Very interesting story about an ancient manuscript. The Aleppo Codex was thought destroyed after riots surrounding the creation of the State of Israel. A decade later at least some of it arrived in Israel. Under some shady circumstances that have been obscured for decades it became the property of a state institution with ties to the then President of Israel. At some point after this it was discovered a large portion was in fact missing. Periodic interest has heated up several times, but no real answers and the eyewitnesses are already gone or near to. Very interesting saga and an engaging examination of the story that is the Aleppo Codex. While the treatment of Israeli actions in the aftermath seems balanced, the discussion of the foundation of the country and the reaction of the world to it are unabashedly and unquestionably pro Israel. It grated a little at times otherwise I would have given 5 stars.

Journalist and author, Matti Friedman details the history and the journey of one of the greatest books in Jewish Biblical Literature. The Codex, known as the Aram-Tzova, and later, the Aleppo Crown, originated in Tiberius in 930CE. Scholars painstakingly copied in an exact and precise replication, each and every letter, each and every vowel, and each and every word of the Tanach, the Hebrew Bible. The express purpose of the Codex was to insure that Jews in the Diaspora would have only one exact Bible for every Jewish community throughout the world, as singularity and unification was ultimately the only possibility for the survival of Judaism. The Codex, meant to be a reference guide, issued as a bound book rather than a rolled scroll. Mattie Friedman’s non-fiction work offers a wealth of information on Jewish history, and though slows in parts, bogged down in detail, ultimately brings to light the fate of the treasured and beloved, priceless Crown of Aleppo.

The Aleppo CodexThe mystery of the 1000 yr old parchment holy book (Hebrew Bible) is tragic and sad. A few of the missing pages were found, but many were believed stolen, whole books in fact. Secrecy, lies and descriptions are part of its history.Thought to have been damaged by a fire set by rioters in 1947, it was actually a fungus that discolored the pages. Its remaining parts, left deteriorating in a cabinet, were eventually restored. The codex should have been return to the Aleppo Community to whom it belonged. Perhaps then the whole codex would be in one place.

This is an amazing story. I love science fiction but this true story beats almost anything and it's true. More twists plots and characters than any fiction writer could manage. Including a death that might be murder! A morality tale of the venality and corruption that people and governments are capable of when an object of great value comes into play. A sad commentary on the people involved in a country that could have been a "light onto the world"; or purported to be that. The obfuscation and disappearing documents had nothing to do with national of personal security; but resulted in flagellant violations of the mandates enclosed in the very item they coveted, desired and should have been a basis for unifying a country and religion.

This book had many twists and turns in the author's dogged determination to find out what really happened to this sacred book. Had this not been labeled non-fiction, I would have thought it was fiction. This author takes the reader on his journey to discover the truth. His conclusion as to what happened is unexpected, yet makes sense.

I have been aware of the official, sanitized, history of the Codex, so I was surprised at Friedman's exposure of the apparent theft of the missing pages. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised at the cover-up by so many academicians, but I found this at least as disturbing as the apparent theft itself. Friedman leads the reader through his own stages of discovery. He writes well and makes a convincing case. Friedman refrains from an actual "j'accuse" moment, but lets the reader draw his own conclusions.

I am still shaking my head, having just finished this book. First of all, since it's a review, this book is written masterfully! It reads like a novel and pulls you through to the end. Second, this story is riveting and sad. Matti Friedman sums it up perfectly as the book ends -- the codex survived centuries through countless eras of destruction and now, during a time when it was "safe," the people who were there to safe guard it and finally give it a home in Jerusalem stole it. It is so hard for me to envision the codex being passed along through generations, only to be "lost" within my generation. I hope this story isn't over and that it surfaces. But, regardless, this book is exceptional!

I just finished this book. I also had a shot of rum, a shot of amaretto, and a glass of red wine, so let's see how this review goes! All in all I hated this book. Okay, it wasn't that bad. The more I think of this book, the more I can see the good qualities. Let's start with the good. This is a book about sadness. Sadness sells! Look at Toni Morrison and Amy Tan. Both authors sell books of sadness. Perhaps Plascencia is too in your face though. He uses the word 'sadness' over and over. Way to be discreet! There is magical realism. That sounds like a super interesting topic. We have our world and we have magic! Woohoo! When you think about it, the magic in the book is like the magic in the Bible: plagues, resurrections, creation of a new race. The People of Paper is heavily inspired by the Bible. Unfortunately, it feels just weird. People who burn their flesh with kerosene so they stop peeing in bed? People who grabs bees and purposefully sting themselves to remove depression? So weird...And that's not even the weirdest part! People decide to war against the planet Saturn! It makes no sense! How do you war against a planet? I do not understand...Perhaps this is allegory, and you have to be profound to get it. Unfortunately I am not getting it. Yes, I know who Saturn is. The book reveals it halfway through. But I still feel like the war is pointless. Is that the point? The pointlessness of war? If so...The book just made a very large circle to make that point...All in all I hated it. Okay...I didn't hate it, but The People of Paper is a solid 3 stars. It was okay. Parts were funny, parts were tedious, parts were creative, and parts made zero sense. Perhaps I am simply not a fan of Plascencia's writing style. I do not regret reading it, but I probably would not have finished it if it weren't the book chosen for our book club.Oh yeah! This is the 8th book of our book club.

This is a defiant novel. It defies standard form. It defies standard plot. And the characters even defy the novelist when they develop an antagonistic relationship with Plascencia and his role in their lives. If this sounds odd, it is. This is a very odd book. But here's the thing: this novel also defies any expectation you might bring to it. It can be classified as post-modern as it is full of self-reference, but where so many post-modern novels feel cold and distant, THE PEOPLE OF THE PAPER is full of warmth and deep emotion. Plascencia weaves the fantastic with the absurd with the humorous with the heartfelt to create a portrayal of the human condition that is at once universal and unique.I read this novel seven years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. Indeed, it has haunted me, its imagery and emotional heft coming back to me again and again. I read a lot of novels but few have such a lasting effect. I don't know of a higher praise for a book.

This, in some sense, is storytelling about storytelling, and the result is absolutely lovely--I can't say much more than that without feeling liking I'm giving too much away.I will, however, leave you with two things:(1) At one point in the novel, The People of Paper is described as "the war on omniscient narration (a.k.a. the war against the commodification of sadness)" which I thought was fitting.(2) It takes some of the modern style (that others would call "gimmicks") employed by the likes of Dave Eggers in A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Jonathan Safran Foer in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Movie Tie-In): A Novel to a whole new level. If you thought those were gimmicky, avoid this altogether.

he People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia is a novel that is in no way easy to categorize. According to Plascencia, the novel is “a war-novel, a memoir, it’s about immigration, it’s a meta-fiction, and it’s a love-story.” The heart of the novel is built around Federico de la Fe and his daughter, Little Merced, who leave Mexico for the United States after Federico’s wife, Merced, leaves him. Once in the U.S., Federico bands together with the locals, forming a group called the EMF who wage a war “against Saturn, against sadness, and against omniscient narration.” The novel is written in three sections, each including several chapters. Each chapter enlists the perspectives of a variety of characters, including Saturn, the omniscient narrator. The pages are laid out in columns, and, at one point, words are blacked out or, in certain editions, are cut from the page. The narrator himself makes an appearance as well. Weird in plot, characterization, genre, organization, and style, I cannot think of a book stranger and more exciting than The People of Paper.

What an amazing book, but what sadness I feel knowing that a lot of people (not of paper but of meat) will never be exposed to it. It is this feeling what often takes me from thinking 'this is a good book' all the way to 'this is excellent.' The genres it is usually catalogued under run from Latin to Experimental, but I'm here to say that it should just be under Excellent Fiction. The author has a creative genius that transcends geography and time and returns the novel to what it should be, something new and fresh - the word novel should, after all, stand for something. All the praises to this book, one that I'll be happy to recommend to anyone looking for original literary and emotional research.

I love Plascencia's metafictive writing style. His approach is so different from the traditional metafiction and so less, for lack of a better word, douchy. His imagination is wild and creative and bold. His sense of culture both American and Mexican and Mexican-American (Chicano) is steep and he is able to give a history, anthropology and sociology class all in a few hundred pages. Not to mention his stimulation of all the senses keeps you interested throughout the book. My only regret was not buying the hardcopy version, as it has actual pages with cut out sections and neat intricacies that the paperback version lacks. All in all, a great read for anyone who is trying to find inspiration into their own imagination.
