Blacky was my second favorite Burgess character when I was growing up. A rascal, a trouble maker, a thief and very sly, Burgess somehow makes Blacky likeable and fills his book with life lessons. I think that one reason I like Blacky was my experiences with real crows on my grandfather's farm. They were thieves who spoiled more than they ate, which was no small matter to a poor farmer. They were still interesting and difficult opponents. Sly, cautious, seldom taken by surprise, not fooled for long by scarecrows or decoys and hard to hunt, the real crows were every bit as clever as Blacky. Some may object to an apparent anti-hunting message in this book. A closer read will reveal that Burgess is objecting to unethical hunting practices. True, Blacky and the others do not like hunters or their "terrible" guns. This did not bother me as a child who loved nature and hunting. I understood that of course the anthropomorphic prey animals would not like hunters, human or other animals. Burgess was a hunter and a naturalist who understood and loved the outdoors and communicated that in his stories. If you haven't already done so, introduce a child to Burgess to help begin a love affair with the outdoors. As usual, there are no illustrations in the free Kindle edition.
This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title; 8 color ones, printed on plates, for Little, Brown, of which 4 were later used for Grosset & Dunlap, printed in B&W on plates. Then, Cady redrew those 4 as line drawings for Grosset & Dunlap to print on the text paper stock instead of on plates. Those 4 line drawings are crude by Harrison Cady's standards, compared to the line drawings he did for many other Burgess books. This Dover edition has the 4 crude line drawings. Some other Dover editions have the illustrations from the B&W plates, and it would have been better if they had done that for this title too. But kudos to Dover for getting it basically right for this title. If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Little, Brown edition too -- mostly to get all 8 higher-quality drawings, but also to see them in color as Cady originally drew them.
WONDERFUL BOOK!! This book came to me in PERFECT condition! It was just like it was brand new, but it's the 1922 edition! VERY PLEASED with the book AND it came with a wonderful handwritten note from the seller. Very cordial and thoughful. The book is one that my parents read to my brother when we were children (I'm in my 70's), and I am now reading it to my Grandson. It has important lessons of life weaved into the story for little ears to hear!
I was looking for small books for Free to put on my Kindle and this was one. Short chapters of 112 pages and a story that is like one as an aesop fable. Easy reading but not for a very young child, but would be good if read to a child. Each chapter Blackytries things such as eating and in how he does it there is a lesson he and we could learn by what he does. I found it very entertaining. I also wondered where were these books when I was young. Burgess has a lot of children's books of this type and other. I do plan on downloading his other books of these animal lesson stories. Very entertaining and a fast read.
Aside from the anti-hunting bias - presuming humans who hunt do so only for sport, rather than food, as did my family - these tales make a most delightful way to learn about the animals around us.
Burgess's writing is smooth and intelligent; he writes for children but doesn't talk down to them, and the stories are based on real observations of animal behavior. Read these aloud to children and both of you will be entertained!
I enjoyed buying these classic animal stories for my children when they were little. Bought them for my grand daughters and now I am buying them yet again for my great granddaughter. I can only hope they all have enjoyed them as much as my sister and I did when we were little and our mother read them to us. Thornton Burgess is a Classic author.
We used this book as a month long bedtime story for our 7yr old who is homeschool Waldorf style. It was a perfect fit for our curriculum and her developmental stage. We cannot wait to read more stories by Thornton Burgess. We really enjoyed this witty personification of a common forest character as well as the morals and messages Blacky shares with us. Blacky was truly entertaining and the style of prose is wholesome and uplifting. A great book!
