Review

“A guidebook on how everything we need to know about the weather can be learned by paying close attention to our natural surroundings in general and our gardens in particular…You'll never look at your garden the same way again.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Wohlleben’s insightful observations of nature, combined with his signature blend of science and imagination, invite us into deeper relationship with the ecology of our homes.” —David George Haskell, Pulitzer finalist and author of The Forest Unseen and The Songs of Trees   “For a society increasingly distanced from nature, Wohlleben renews our appreciation of the wonderful and varied ties between the living and nonliving worlds, including those that bind our favorite plants and animals with that most familiar of all physical entities, the weather.” —Bill Streever, nationally bestselling author of Cold

The Weather Detective, while at times interesting and informative, is not a book likely to change the way you view the natural world as The Hidden Life of Trees did for many of us. Less a book on weather and more on proper gardening practices in Western Europe, I couldn’t help but feeling slightly disappointed when I finished reading.Wohlleben does write with acuity about the need for human beings to reintegrate with the natural world and get out of the artificial technological ecosystems we spend so much of our life in. He provides many suggestions on how to read and interpret nature from southerly winds to different kinds of birds. But the presentation is more of various factoids than of synthesis. While the genius of the Hidden Life of Trees consisted of synthesizing and popularizing a wealth of scientific material and personal experience running counter to our common sense impressions, The Weather Detective has none of this structure. As mentioned, much of it just deals with organic gardening practices. This is great if you maintain a garden but obviously not as interesting if you do not.In short, though the book does contain a lot of wisdom on how to read and understand nature I wouldn’t recommend it unless you garden and are interested in a more scientific understanding of gardening. While not a waste of time for other readers, the book is too unstructured—and doesn’t even have the same elan—to compare favorably with Wohlleben’s earlier mini-classic.

It is a very interesting book, sometimes not comparable to "The Hidden Life of Trees" and "The Inner Life of Animals", but it carries its 'message' and is a worth 'follow-up' of the other two books by Peter Wohlleben.

This just wasn't the book in thought it was. I expected a field guide of sorts that would explain how to read my surroundings for clues as to how the weather would change but this was more anecdotal. What tips were in there didn't have much explanation and often felt tossed in.

Perfect

Wonderful book, perfect gift

How many of us discover the weather from the screen of our cell phone, or television. Wohllbean challenges us to look out the window. This is excellent advice. If you’re a gardener or farmer, you know that the weather five miles from where you are can be rain while you’re having sun. I have friends in Florida who live in an area they call the desert because they get so little rain while those of us ten miles away have a relatively good amount. The only problem with Wohllbean’s discussion of the weather is that in he discusses European weather rather than what we experience in the US. However, what he says about where weather comes from can be translated usefully to the US. The book also has interesting information about pests in the garden and discusses aspects of the weather. I found the formation of hail particularly interesting.Wolhllbean talks about sensitizing us to how what we do affects the environment. Most of us wouldn’t think about it, but painting your garden furniture with wood preservative means the stain will wash away if the furniture is left our during the year allowing the chemicals to seep into the soil. Chemicals in the soil will affect insects and worms some of which you want to foster in your garden. A better idea is to use natural pigments or more durable wood.If you are a gardener, this is a good book. You may know or practice many of Wohllbean’s recommendations, but I’m sure you’ll find new interesting ideas.I received this book from Dutton for this review.

'The Weather Detective' by Peter Wohlleben with English translation by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp is the third book by the author. It's also continuing in the vein of his other works. In this work, the author seems to want us to slow down a bit and look and listen around us. The weather can be seen in the signs in our gardens, and how the critters who inhabit our yards are acting. How plants can survive in global warming, how much water is enough for plants, and what creatures we should allow in our yards are also discussed. The cycle of seasons, and the moon, and a typical day are opined on.It's a short work, and only the first third is about the weather. I was hoping there might be a bit more content on the subject, but I still found myself liking the work. It's a book to read and relax with. A book to read outside as you listen to the wind and the birds.I received a review copy of this book from Dutton-Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this book.

As noted by at least one other reviewer, this book is really concerned with gardening tips for those living in Germany and has very little to do with weather as such. And while there are little caches of interesting information here and there, it is for the most part written in a way that it's perhaps more appropriate as a children's book: I don't really need to have someone explain to me why there are seasons, for example. I've not read the author's Hidden Life of Trees, but just by glancing through it, I believe I can tell that it's goingto a far better and engrossing read. If you get this one, however, give it to your third-grade daughter or son for their birthday.
