I read this book about 20 or 25 years ago when the "Troubles" in Ireland were still a big, tragic mess. Thank God that's pretty much history (or at least appears to be). It's an enlightening read about the lousy situation the Catholics in Ulster faced, what it was like to grow up in that, how the mess developed over time, how the authorities often did the absolute wrong thing, and how ordinary people almost naturally and necessarily became radicalized. Taking human nature as something relatively constant and transposing the ingredients to any other place and time, we get a pretty disturbing picture of the possibilities. Or put in another way, you can extract some general principles from the Irish troubles, look around the world, change a few terms such as Ulster to Kenya or the Balkans, and the underlying patterns are pretty consistent. It's all too explicable. It amazes me that this Enlightenment notion of the perfectibility of human nature wasn't among the millions killed off by Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Idi Amin and our other 20th Century greats. In his 1962 Nobel Prize acceptance speech John Steinbeck said, "I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature." What a fool.

McCann's book is a brilliant look at the Troubles and the impact on his home town of Derry. Far too often, all we see of the troubles is stone throwing youths or bombs going off in Britain, with no explaination of how it got to this point. McCann shows brilliantly the historical context from which the troubles were spawned, and in doing so demolishes completely the myth of two tribes with no common ground. Essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about the politics of Northern Ireland.

This is an enjoyable way to learn Norwegian by the use of pictures and stickers. I find it a useful adjunct to my other Norwegian books. I find it better to have a few different books read in parallel to provide interest and novelty and to tempt me to keep the glacier of progress moving. Learning any language is to me is also like traversing a vast ocean. The main thing is to keep sailing and not sink or return to shore defeated. Some of us are strongly visual while others are aural and others kinaesthetic in our learning. A mixture of approaches appeals to me more than one sense and this book is mostly visual as I am.

anyone who thinks that learning a new language is hard is dead wrong. people should remember that this is the 21st century and more is understood about how the human brain takes in and stores information . the book give the reader A SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF LEARNING A LANGUAGE, this is why although you need only ten a day to become confident enough in any language in about month to wing it on your own anywhere without a guide , but also carry on a conversation outside that of the common tourist to native chat that takes place. you will find yourself advancing so fast that you will spend more than ten minutes because the method is fun and ingages the whole brain . i struggled wth portuguese a long time before this book , dont make the costly mistake of buying courses that use primitive outdated methods get this book . and if you wish to go deeper pimsleur cd coureses are cheap and VASTLY SUPERIOR TO ANY OTHERS.

First and foremost is the fact that I cannot use the CD rom on my macbook. It is supposed to be Mac compatible however it is not compatible with the latest updated version apparently. Luckily, I have access to a Mac desktop which has not been updated for several years. It does work on that one although it's not as convenient for me to do the lessons on that computer. The book is attractive but the way some of the lessons are designed are somewhat unproductive in my opinion. The CD rom has some very nice activities which I enjoy very much but they are limited to only a few subjects. I wish there was a lot more information on the disc in the same formula because otherwise they are a very fun way to learn. Basically this set is still a good purchase if used in conjunction with other methods as a supplement.

I reviewed this book once before and I said it was a difficult language to learn. I have upgraded my review because now I am speaking some short sentences. It would have been great if this came with the audio cd's like 10 min german.There are so-o-o- many grammar rules and sounds we do not use in English so this is a language that has to be 'heard' to get it.I got a lot of help off you tube,there is a lady on there who does page by page of this book.and then there are different dialects. all in all I do like it very much but I do spend a lot more than 10 minutes a day learning.I would give this 5 stars if it came with audio cd's

This is at a basic level but even with some knowledge already I have found it useful revision, and fun. The CD is good for listening practice and pronunciation and the workbook offers lots of practical aids like sticky labels, study aids and other useful things like traffic signs, menu guides and conversions. I like the way that the new words you learn are then incorporated into the text and instructions but you are never left without the translations or help with correct pronunciation, which helps build confidence. You build on earlier learning, but are not left floundering by around page 5 as with so many other language learning books. You'll get much more from a trip to Norway if you've spent 10 minutes a day on this, and you'll have fun doing it. Of course you won't get much chance to practice in Norway because most people love to show off their excellent English, but you'll be able to read signs and menus and timetables, and hear the words and phrases you have learned spoken around you, and if you are lucky you'll find people who will let you practice! Enjoy x

The "10 minutes a day" series is a simple, straight to the point workbook system that when used daily really does work. I have used their Spanish and Portuguese workbooks and both gave me what I needed to go from not speaking a word to being able to speak enough to dive into the real world. Day by day the lessons introduce you to basic vocabulary. The lessons help you quickly learn basic grammatical structure and key questions that will help you learn to navigate through everyday travel scenarios. The sticky labels are very effective at effortlessly increasing your vocabulary. Everytime you look at or pick up any labeled object in your house you automatically see the word written in the new language so that you can't help but add the items that you need and use everyday to your new vocabulary. I also found these workbooks to be really helpful when used in conjunction with programs like Rosetta Stone.

I ordered this for my husband, at his request. He likes it because he can select the order of what he is studying. I use the free Duolingo product, online, that requires me to follow "their" order of sequence, which I admit is irksome. Duolingo is not geared toward travelers and their conversational needs, but just to a general language learning process. However, I am plodding along with it, anyway. My husband likes the Norwegian in 10 minutes a day and intends to keep using it until we leave for Norway later in the summer. He has not yet tried the CD, just the workbook. We hope that together we will be able to understand menus and prices and the like, and be polite when spoken to.

This book is a great learning tool for learning the foundation of a language. I am fluent in Norwegian, however, my girlfriend is not. I bought this because from the looks of it, it is a basic foundation which she or anyone needs to know. The phrases you learn are the basic which may sound different to a Norwegian, but they get what you mean and from what you learn in the book, it is a fantastic jump. The vocabulary in the book is very important to learn to expand your learning of the language- or any language for that matter. I recommend this book for another learning tool- but make sure you have more resources than this book!

If you've read other translations of this book---mis-titled in earlier versions---you will feel you are reading it for the first time. Notes from a Dead House, in this translation, is also a good introduction for readers just getting into Dostoevsky, because it raises so many of the ethical and moral concerns in his later books, though only in outline here. We're fortunate to have the many fresh translations that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced; any of them will make you want to read all of Dostoevsky, or reread him again as if for the first time.

I have been reading Dostoyevsky for 20 years. Dostoyevsky's writing changed dramatically by his prison camp experience. It took on meaning that his earlier works did not have. Therefore reading this work has it's importance regarding what shaped the Dostoevsky of novels like "The Brothers Karmazov". Suffering brings clarity to what life means when it's stripped of pride, self reliance, and selfishness. You see although he didn't state it in the work, through his suffering Dostoyevsky discovered the nature of God, Christ, and himself. That clearly comes through his later works.

This novel has a few moments of important and well stated insight to the human condition but overall its dry delivery left me unimpressed. The Gulag Archipelago is more insightful for prison life.

My love for the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky has been passed down to the next two generations. It is no accident that one of my grandson's bears the middle name of Fyodor! The author's memoir about prison life - thinly disguised as a novel, has undergone a stunning and beautiful new translation at the hands of the gifted husband and wife team of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.Dostoevsky was initially sentenced to die by firing squad for his involvement in a Utopian socialist discussion group. The CTsar commuted his sentence to four years in Siberia. This book, "Notes From A Dead House" represents Dosoevsky's memories of those years, smuggled out of the prison in bits and pieces.Most striking in this narrative is the transformation that the aristocratic protagonist undergoes as he begins to recognize the common humanity that he shares with many of the prisoners - even with the least likable among them. The language in this marvelous translation is rich and evocative. The characters we meet are memorable and idiosyncratic, in many cases giving hints at future fictional characters like Raskolnikov and members of the Karamazov family.For any fan of Dostoevsky's remarkable oeuvre, this book is a welcome addition to your library.

It’s too bad the physical book was so damaged when I got it. The pages weren’t cut evenly and the front cover had a massive crease on it I couldn’t manage. I read it anyways though - great book but buy it from someone else

I bought this as a christmas gift for a family member that is a avid fisherman, but gave it to him early when he opened the amazon box by mistake, thinking he was helping me...and saw what was inside.He is enjoying the many stories and likes that it is not a whole book to read at once.. that he can pick a short story and read it at his leisure without feeling like he has to sit down and read it from cover to cover in one setting. I asked him how he liked it and he replied with a thumbs up!This is a soft cover book with 277 pages, no photos other than on the cover.. and 28 different fishing stories. Edited by Lamar Underwood and I noticed a copyright date of 2000, so the book has been around for a while.This book makes a excellent gift for that hard to buy sportsman type person.. and I like the idea of a gift that after it has been read, can be loaned out to others to read and share the stories.

I bought this book for my ten year old nephew as a Christmas gift because he is an avid fisherman. I hoped because it was collection of short stories it would hold his attention. He loves it! He is not normally crazy about reading but he loves this book. I would definitely recommend it to a fishing enthusiast.

this book is not written for fishermen. it is flowery, long winded, unexciting and not even remotely about the fishing, the fight, the landing or the overall feeling of FISHING. and it is certainly not about marlin or even billfish. most of the stories are about bass or trout or other small species.huge waste of money. :(

Bought this for a fisherman-friend's birthday. He loved the book, and was especially pleased that not only were the stories diverse and well-written, but the chapters were short. Easy to get through a whole chapter in a relatively brief sitting and not have to worry about "OK, what was the story line up to the point I stopped reading last time?"

Not enjoyable to read unless you are very much into fly fishing stories from days long past. Despite the cover photograph, which was the only interesting fishing story in my humble opinion, none of the stories dealt with anything but fly fishing for trout and the impact that had on the life of the author.

Warning, Dont start reading this book unless you have plenty of time because you are sure to be hooked.I love the intro to each story which tells about the author and his body of work.

This book was an eye-opener. It confirmed much of what I've experienced in various staff roles and as a lead pastor. The paradoxes of tensions faced by anyone serving on a staff was well explained. If there was one negative, it might be the absence of testimonies of second chair leaders from smaller churches. Still, the book's tenets are easily transferred into any church of any size. Even as a lead pastor, I came away from this book recognizing myself as a "second chair" that follows the Lord Jesus Christ. This book is not another leadership book full of theory and technique. Instead, the book lays out material that can be used by pastors and staff in their churches.

As lead pastor, this read brought clarity to my past struggles and pain. I am soaring in ministry today because of "second chair" preparation. I am better equipped to lead my "second chairs". Thank you!

As the lead pastor of a church I appreciate the public acknowledgment of the immense value of second chair leadership. Any senior pastor who feels a need to micromanage or minimize the role of others is guilty of leading the church to mediocrity, sort of like an engine only running on one cylinder. I always want my second chair leaders to be LEADERS in every sense of the word.This book also cautions second chair leaders to check their personal egos at the door when they enter. Subordination is a great American weakness that does great damage to the church. Often second chair leaders excell in vision, energy, and drive, but too often are weak in areas of savy and experience. If the first chair leader feels threatened, things quickly go from bad to worse. This book builds savy.This book is timely, important, and could potentially prevent many ministry wrecks. I suggest that every multiple staff church use it as a study guide for a series of staff meetings. I wish it had come along earlier in my ministry.

If you are a Christian leader, read this. Even if you are not a 2nd chair because you are the head honcho, read this to help you better understand the role of the second chair and how to support them.I will say, though, they use the word subordinate, which is often taken negatively. Put that aside and think about the meaning of the concept the book is trying to explain.

I'm someone who recently transitioned from first chair to second chair by choice due to a recognition of my strenghths and weaknesses. This book helped in that transition as I felt my way around this new role. It also helped confirm for me that I had made the right choice. I found especially helpful the section on the "deep/wide paradox" in seeing the need for balance between minutia and grand vision. Also helpful (and humbling for a former first chair) was the section on the "subordinate leader paradox". This book will be extremely helpful to the second chair leader who feels trapped in a bad situation with a bad first chair (not me) but is still full of great wisdom for the person in a great situation with a great first chair leader(like my church). I recomended this book to a church planter in Hawaii and he read it along with his potential second chair guy, which I thought was a great use of this book. Every second chair leader should read this, especially young guys like myself.

This book was timely and helped me to see that while I may never be the one casting the vision the opportunity to support vision and develop others is every bit a high calling. The role of the minister is a interesting position in a congregation. The minister holds no office or authority in the congregation, but holds a ton of influence in the church. A minister is under the authority of eldership is must function in that role. He must work to establish and push ahead the focus and direction of the eldership within the congregation. Of course he should not push a direction that is not Biblical or incorrect, but must be submission to the wishes of those he serves. This book is a good book of helping a minister understand his place in a congregation. The book is written more for an associate minister or youth minister in a denominational context of a pastor being the head leader in a church, but the book applies well to a minister's role within the churches of Christ in response to an eldership. A minister must not push his agenda that is contrary to the direction of those in charge of the souls in the congregation. The book deals with not be intimidating to an eldership, not pushing your agenda, working within the confides of your role, and having influence without being a treat. This is a good book, especially the first part.
