I work for an umbrella organization of American-based peacebuilding organizations where we have used the Arbinger Institute's other two books to help get our own staff to work more effectively. Therefore, I pre-ordered it and read it the moment it arrived this morning.Like Arbinger's other two books, Outward Mindset makes what looks like simple points that turn out to be very difficult to actually put into practice yet which also can have tremendous payoffs.Their first two books are written largely in the form of allegories that show the reader the principles underlying their work. This one is based on real world examples from their practice AND focuses more on things the reader can do in his or her own environment.The Arbinger team is by no means the only group to talk about mindsets or personal paradigms--see the work of Carol Dweck or John Kotter for others.But, what sets this book apart is its focus on the initiatives we as individuals or our organizations can take to address issues head on by assessing the needs of the people we work with and then trying to help them reach their objectives and/or overcome their challenges. What's more, they argue that we can and must take such initiatives even if the other party does not respond in kinds at least initially. In fact, they make the case that that's just about the only constructive thing one can do.As one critical reviewer put it, this book does read like a catalogue of Arbinger's success stories. But, I know from my own work using even some of these principles, they can and do work far more often than one would think. It is fair to say that the book could have benefited from more examples in which an outward mindset did not lead to stunning payoffs, but even so, this is an important book for anyone trying to build a more peaceful planet, workplace, or home.

I’ve been looking for a way to explain the difference between my productive and mediocre teams. Some people and groups just seem to accomplish more. This book describes it in a way that I never thought possible. I think we have all seen those people that are just so helpful in the workplace that we wish everyone worked that way. Well, here is the recipe. The message is easy to follow and the help is clear and doable. I found the story based teaching in this book to be very insightful. It is one of the most inspiring business books that I have ever read.

I read the book for a class on maximizing team performance. The focus is on how you can train yourself to focus on the needs of others: teams, customers, peers, etc and how this is good for business. My take-away is "How can I be more helpful to...". If you think that way, you'll have more positive results at work and also in relationships.

Our grandson is autistic. Going through puberty, behavior problems, out of control. Wonderful parents. Supportive grandparents. Desperate situation. Sent to boys ranch with horse therapy. The foundation of their program is Arbinger. As grandparents, we educated ourselves by reading and trying to practice before he came home after >10 months. He is a wonderful young man at only 14 yrs old. Now wise beyond his years . Thanks so much. Highly recommend. At first seems simplistic, Just keep reading and practicing.

Excellent information and the narrator was easy to listen to.The information here can change office dynamics and really improve our ability to work with our teams.As a professional counselor I use this both in relationship counseling and trainings, but also in organizational counseling, and employee employer cultivation and counseling.I highly recommend reading all of The Arbinger Institute books. Good stuff. Not the end all be all, but very valuable assets for your kit bag!

This is one of my favorite books and one I am giving to others to read as fast as I can. The concept of thinking outside of ourselves is critical in conflict resolution. People often think their logic is right when it is only right for them. They think their job is what matters without considering the impact it has on others. The outward mindset helps us see bigger, broader and better.

I've always loved the writings and narratives of Garth Nix, and this book is by no means an exemption. I first read this book and began my journey with Arthur when it first came out and eagerly awaited the next installment with bated breath. And now, after all these years, I have returned to this series and it is still as captivating as when I first read it. If you're looking for a story that has an interesting plot and characters while being a fun and entertaining read, then I highly recommend picking up not only this book but the entire series.

Though not a fan of fantasy, I do read it occasionally to keep up on what my students are reading. The richly imagined descriptions in this series made it one that I enjoyed reading. An asthmatic seventh grade boy, Arthur Penhaligan, is the hero for this seven book fantasy. Handicapped and with the odds always against him, he does not give up trying to do what's right. A rich stew of surreal Alice in Wonderland-type imagery and characters, elements reminiscent of myths, an alternate universe, endless hair's breadth escapes, grisly horror, and mystery, Keys to the Kingdom never lags. However, this series is not just a vividly imagined movie in print for a happy reader to follow. Keys to the Kingdom is a thinking kid's fantasy. If one pays close enough attention, answers to the great questions of the origins of our world and our human natures might come close to being answered.Well-liked by both boys and girls in my middle school classes, this series is favored by boys; and though written at a seventh grade reading level, is also well-liked by high school boys into about tenth grade. The interest level is rated at grade five through eight. Both the complexity of the plot and the at times nightmare-like imagery may keep this from being a book for fifth grade and under, unless a child in these years is looking to be challenged and a little frightened.The series starts with Mister Monday and moves through each day of the week: Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday, Lady Friday, Superior Saturday, and the eagerly awaited and yet un-named Sunday episode.Gaby Chapman

There's certainly one thing to be said about everything Nix writes, and that is that it's rife with original creativity and completely new fantasy stories. However, sometimes the books themselves, although phenomenally imaginative, are hit or miss depending on how much Nix is able to flesh out the story. The Seventh Tower series, for instance, is deftly imagined, a two worlds drawn together through light and shadow, and the ability to use colored gemstones to create light beams that can do all sorts of interesting things. Unfortunately for whatever reason, Nix doesn't explore the world and the story enough. It's much more like eating watery soup than it is like consuming a good meal.The Abhorsen Trilogy, on the other hand, is a great work, and although it's not a classic literature sort of story, the world itself is fleshed out well, so that the reader can really imagine the world and lose themselves in it. I feel like the Keys to the Kingdom series is a mixture of both, and I'd love to see the world more fully explored. The first book, especially, seems to move toward that path, but as the books progress, they seem to become more and more formulaic and lacking in substance. Ultimately, Nix's imagination seems to know no bounds, but if he would slow down and put more life into these books, I think they would be much better. Not to say that the books aren't fun to read, but I believe they could be fun to read and rich. Hopefully his next fantasy series will be more like The Abhorsen Trilogy.-Lindsey Miller, [...]

Arthur is a severely asthmatic 7th grader. But when he finds himself in the woods on the edge of suffocating to death, two Victorian-style men appear and once is tricked into giving the boy a magical key.This key not only saves him from death but entangles him in a conspiracy between supernatural forces going back tens of thousands of years.It starts slow. And Arthur spends too long with nothing explained, being pushed around by strange forces. But about halfway through the world begins to make sense. And at long last he moves from reactor to having a goal and some power to take steps forward. The last half of the book was good and I'm hoping the second in the series starts with the energy and clarity that we ended with.

Mister Monday is an interesting Fantasy novel that draws readers in from the very beginning. The main character, Arthur is flawed and that is what makes him the "chosen" one for the Keys to the Kingdom. In this series starter, Arthur learns what power he has as he tries to determine how to live his life with this key that he has obtained and this house and little, scary fantasy creatures that no one else can see but him.Arthur starts to think he is losing it, but a few friends from his P.E. class see the creatures too, so Arthur apprehensively goes on his journey as the reluctant hero who is bound to find a way to save his community and family.This book along with Grim Tuesday will hook readers on this series. I can't wait for the rest of the books in this series.Harry Potter lovers can definitely find a new love in this series.

The writing is good, the characters are good, but it is written to stretch out through seven books, so key plot issues never get fully resolved when you expect that they should. The story line thus drags out in way that reminded me of the Series of Unfortunate Events. I am not going to bother to read the other six books because it feels like it will be unsatisfying if each books ends with "Oh, by the way, there is still another issue that has to be resolved before the hero can rest, so you have to read the next book."

Then I discovered your books. I feel like Columbus… finally a new retreat, a breath of fresh air, a new friend. Your books have a wonderful writing style, not layered with useless facts & fiction that add pages to the novel but nothing to the story line. I adore your humor and the interplay of the characters. Thank You for sharing your wonderful talent.

This was a delightful story about the development of the telegragh, the key players involved and how that technology changed communications.The books moderate length was written in a well balanced manner. It is quite intertaining and full of interesting storries and facts.I give Tom Standage a thumbs up for this writing. It has been on my shelf of books to read for some time. I am really glad I picked it up and read it.I have been in the telecommunications field for over 30 years. I have found this book to be very educational as well. The author defends the title well by making a parallel connection to the Internet of today. I was not disappointed in anyway with Mr. Standage's ability to tell this story. Great job!

This is an entertaining little study on how the impact of the development of the internet on contemporary society uncanily paralled the impact of the telegraph on Victorian society. Standage makes his case with clever historical reference and light humor. One can clearly see the similarities between a younger generation growing up with the "new" technology of telegraphy at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries and the- social impact made by internet culture on the generation which came of age at the turn of the 20th-21st century. Amusing to note how past luminaries like Thomas Edison could practically have been exchanged for more recent superstars like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. And the problems encountered -- and engendered -- by both technologies were not dissimilar, either, as scoffers and luddites dragged their heals, even while well-healed entrupreneurs were looking for every possible way to make a buck off users of the new communication systems, and governments were arguing about if, and how to regulate the d&mned things. For a cogent and fascinating comparison of the golden age of telegraphy with today's internet, the Victorian Internet nicely fills that niche.

"Time-traveling Victorians arriving in the late twentieth century would, no doubt, be unimpressed by the Internet." This excerpt from the epilogue is the best one sentence summary for the entire book.While we marvel at the progress of our information networks in the past two decades - as we should - it is sometimes easy to forget that much of the same rhetoretoric and enthusiasm was shared more than 150 years earlier when the telegraph shrunk the world to a world-wide latency of minutes for any news or information. As such, the "Internet" has already been in existence for well over a century. Technology changed, latency improved by a constant factor, bandwidth improved by orders of magnitude, and the costs shrunk - yes, all true, but the basic structure is still the same.Reading "Victorian Internet", it is easy to see that all one has to do is scrub out the word "telegraph" and replace it with the "world wide web", and you may as well be reading an article in your (online) newspaper.Well organized book, with many great stories, facts, and research to keep you engaged throughout. If you're curious about the origins of the telegraph, and its evolution from a semaphore (visual telegraph) to backbone of all communication, then this is definitely "the book"!P.S. Western Union discountined their telegraph business in 2002. Any bets on when we'll discontinue our TCP/IP routers? 2112?

A fun history of telecommunications relying heavily in fun anecdotes. Each inventions has it's base, creator, investors, entrepreneurs, and abusers. The story of the Blanc brothers who managed to hack the French government's optic telescope to make money off the stock market is among these :) The parallels with the modern world may be a bit out of date (1997 - he talks more of SMSs and e-mails) but it's not a far stretch

Tom Standage mentions chronocentricity on p 213 as "the egotism that one's own generation is poised on the very cusp of history." Comparing modern times to the past, he says "if any generation has the right to claim that it bore the full bewildering, world-shrinking brunt of such a revolution, it is not us -- it is our nineteenth-century forbears." Commentator Gary Hoover defines chronocentricity as being "obsessed with our own era, considering it the most important or most dynamic time ever." Being a history major, I find The Victorian Internet (TVI) to be an enlightening antidote to chronocentricity, and I recommend it to anyone trying to better understand modern times through the lens of history.In TVI, readers will encounter themes very familiar to those involved with the latest telecommunications revolution: using communications to catch criminals; concerns with privacy, and an inability to identify users; application of codes and encryption to foil thieves and governments, if possible; corruption affecting various aspects of the system; heavy reliance by the financial industry; operator jargon; dealing with load and congestion; transmission errors causing financial problems; users not understanding technology; technology staying ahead of the law; and governments intercepting, copying, and analyzing transmissions.Probably one of the most interesting themes in the book involved expectations that improved communications would lead to world peace. While reading the book a student asked me if the rise of Web 2.0 and social networking sites would result in increased understanding among those of different faiths, hopefully leading to a more peaceful world. At the very least, after reading a book like TVI, I can say the Victorian Internet didn't result in world peace.

This is by far the best medical book I have purchased in some time. It is clearly written and easy to understand the different medical conditions it addresses. Better still are alternative solutions to the usual "cookie cutter" medical practices, and contact information should you decide to investigate some of the alternatives further. It is a very large volume jam-packed with amazing information! Be sure to check out the write-ups on Mad Cow Disease, MRSA, and Prostate.

This book carries information on many illnesses and gives suggestions for alternative treatments that the mainstream medical community does not consider. Since I am not a physician, some of the suggestions seem to be only for those with medical training. For example, what is given in the index on a given product or illness gives the recommendation of another book that will enlighten the practitioner in how to use the product or address the illness rather than giving an explanation in this book. I was a bit disappointed in it for this reason. However, it opens one's eyes to the possibilities of other approaches to certain illnesses and conditions and suggests otherwise un-thought-of therapies. I realize that to give more explanations about all of the diseases would make the book so large as to be impractical for that reason.

Much better than I thought it would be.Found things here that I had never heard of before.It tells you about different treatments, products, Web sites, sources and just about anything and everything else you don't hear about.I can see why the pharmaceuticals don't want you to get your hands on anything like this, they can't make money on alot of things in this book.I think it was money well spent on this book. Just wish I knew about this years ago.

If you are into helping yourself get well, this is the book you should have. If you don't help yourself - its getting to the point when nobody else will.

Do you have questions? This book has the answers. If you are a serious gardener or a weekend putterer this book is for you. 'Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs' focuses on IPM as a safer more environmentally responsible method of pest and disease combat. It is a wonderful diagnostic tool with hundredes of color photos and tables to ID your plant problems. It can also be used as a teaching text with full explanation of how and why these methods work from highly trusted University of California sources. This book is an amazing value for it's size and content. It has replaced no fewer than five pest/disease books in my library at a cost that was less than half of some of the others that claimed to know it all. I don't know how I gardened so long without it.

A great book but I don't think it lives up to its description: I was expecting more/better from it.

This is not just a reference book fo the educated this is THE EDEDUCATION. Loaded with great pictures and useful information. Not just about bugs. Includes considerable coverage of common diseases and abiotic disorders as well as good cultural practices and plant health care. Best of all it includes recommended treatments for problems.
