I paid 99 cents for this book and I overpaid by 98 cents. This book is meant mostly for 19 and 20 year olds who are trying to figure out how to make some summer money from their drawings. I wish I was joking, but a vast amount of the advice was things like, “Hold a bake saleâ€, “Hold a pancake breakfast†and “I know, you could hold a raffle!â€. I wish I were joking. This book is not meant for those serious about actually learning real ways to fund an actual business.
This is an interesting read. I don't think it's for me because I'm an aspiring entrepreneur & I'm a fashion blogger.
Succinct, straightforward, inspiring, valuable, - I was not prepared to do a proper review but to get my kindle to show 100 percent read I had to complete this
Need to raise money for your art or non-profit? Consider this book a a toolbox of out-of-the-box ideas. Carey's well-organized, simply presented, and super clearly written book demystifies fundraising for any project or idea. He encourages readers to peruse the ideas (you can read through them all in under 30 minutes), to pick one, and to get going. For artists, these ideas aren't necessarily intended to contribute to your fame or grow your career directly so much as to enable you to generate the necessary funds it takes to keep the boat afloat. For example, in chapter one "Create A Product," Carey holds up the founders of Air BnB, who'd run out of cash while courting investors; they dreamed up a limited-edition poetically themed cereal brand, ingeniously promoted it, and promptly sold out to rase $40G's. The other ideas in the first half of the book are staging a fundraising auction, throwing a "feast of ideas" dinner, or starting your own festival, selling products with your designs, and using "texting-to-give" to greatly increase spontaneous giving at your events. All that's just in the first half, but this should give you a flavor of Carey's outside-the-ordinary funding ideas.
Need to do some fundraising? Check out this book of surprising and easy ideas to get yourself started. Carey gives examples of strategies for raising funds that have worked for others (AirBnB!!) and encourages you to think creatively (FEASTs??!!). Best of all, after an inspiring and informative explanation of each idea, he gives you a step by step checklist for planning your own event! Yes- a checklist for each idea! Very useful AND user friendly (I have the eBook). Highly recommended (even if you don't need to do a fundraiser right now it has some very cool ideas!)
Brainard Carey’s advice, if you follow it, is helpful and concise. He offers tips and tricks that are both thought provoking and actionable. I suggest investing in this “how to†Bible for creatives!
The book is well organized and the information is presented concisely. Full of interesting ideas, some of which are more suited to larger enterprises that just individual creative artists such as Chapters 2 Mounting an auction or 4 Texting for donations. Chapters 1 Creating a product and 5 Fundraising by design certainly have applicability for the individual artist.On the whole the book emphasizes developing organizational skills and reaching out to the public as a means to secure funding. A good short read and reference volume.
Brainard Carey never ceases to impress with his creativity, enthusiasm, and passion for original fundraising. “Fund Your Dreams like a Creative Genius,†is part "how to" and part workbook. He offers some ideas which I have never heard before, Glasgow Open House, a variation on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival . It's a healthy kick to getting ahead with your creative projects. Definitely worth the time.
