Brad Thor’s plots are always timely but “Spymaster” is eerily so. A subversive plan by Russia to pull the U.S. into a war in the Baltic region by attacking a small NATO ally, is well within the bounds of credibility. Scarily so. Scott Harvath is tasked with conducting counter measures to thwart the plan. He puts together a crack team using some long-time operators and a few new ones that appear to have the same fire in the belly drive that he does. Thor pulls no punches about his conservative political views and that’s okay by me as long as he doesn’t go off the deep end and get too preachy. I rather liked the more mature philosophical Harvath, who is questioning his own ambitions and expectations for the near and the more remote future. In this 18th book of Scott Harvath’s adventures, Thor has crafted a complex and gripping plot that we can only hope remains firmly in the fictional category because having it become a reality is just too scary to fathom.

This is a very, very good new novel from Mr. Thor. Completely aligned with the current headlines political issues. It is somewhat frightening in that Mr. Thor seems to have a better grip on global geopolitics than any of our current elected representatives. Spy Master tugs at the frightening and still unresolved issues at the heart of the U.S. intelligence community, and raises the critical question of whether our current government agencies are still capable of competing in the modern world of espionage. I think that, ultimately, his answer is that they cannot. I have no background in intelligence ops, but I tend to agree, based on a lot of reading I have done. In my mind, the question that hangs over this novel is whether the Blackwater (now named something else) model is any better? What about accountability. The crux of the Horvath novels is that he, alone (with a competent but small team of specialists) can reliably solve world-shaking issues. I'm not sure that is realistic. But this makes for a great novel! Many of us have seen the video of contractors shooting innocent (?) people from a helicopter in Iraq and laughing about it. Perhaps they weren't all innocent, but the ones attempting to rescue the wounded didn't deserve to be obliterated by gunfire. In our current asymmetric warfare endeavors, which are ongoing in about 133 countries, the boundary between aggressor and defender is nebulous. This concerns me greatly, because our incursion into so many countries, especially in Africa, is not making us any friends. Just review history to see how previous interference in other countries' affairs has worked out for us.OK, enough political stuff. Back to the novel. I bonded with the characters, especially the new addition, Jasinski, and, although the novel was too long for me to read in one sitting, I definitely wanted to! I would say that this is one of Thor's best. Warning: here is a cliff-hanger ending. But that only means that we can at least expect one more novel featuring Scot Horvath.

I have read every book in this series. And it's good to see that the author is showing the evolution and growth of Scot. He's gotten older and now having to rely on his team and instincts. No longer is he the superman but he's still awesome. The story is good and involves the Russians and their ability to manipulate elections and NATO countries. This book is consistent with present day current events. It's intriguing and there's a bit of a cliffhanger ending. This just sits up the next book in this series.

Nobody likes cliffhangers. The non-ending of this book completely makes it a waste of time to read. It's a cheap unprofessional trick to make people buy the next book. I shall not I'm done with Brad Thor. I read all of the other books I will read him no more. he should retire.

Any book Brad Thor writes keeps the secrets and excitement flowing and hard to put down for any length of time. His stories reflect modern day problems heard on the news and news talk programs. I have recommended this book to friends telling them that they won’t be disappointed. Keep writing Brad!

That aspect alone pulls in the reader to a deeper experience than most novelists can.Horvath and his elite team are presented and explored as warriors we actually hope exist, rather than as impossible caricatures of Rambo, and this is where Thor really shines. You don't just root for Harvath and his team of elite manhunters, you fall almost in step with them. His deft ability to humanize every character, good and bad, is just unparalleled. In Spymaster, the character Chase is especially intriguing, and Thor blends him in to the story so well that you just believe he's real, or at least that, like Harvath, just his name has been changed to protect his real life counterpart's true identity.Spymaster is the 18th book in the Harvath series, yet, every book is fresh and enthralling. That is a Herculean achievement in and of itself. You can't put it down, and you can't wait for the next installment. Thor does his homework, and so the world his characters operate in is utterly believable.Step into Harvath's world for a while, and take a break from ours. You'll feel like you were on the mental vacation of a lifetime.

Bought this for my son who loved the author's other book for kids. It did not disappoint. Hard to find good, compelling books that appeal to boys (though this is by no means just for boys!) and this one grabbed him and held on.

Great book. I bought this for my 13 yr old son and it came in perfectly fine.When he finished this for school, I read it as well. Good book - highly recommend.

On the subjects of science, geography, human survival, and intelligence, this is amazing. This provides greater depth to our homeschool high school study of WWII!

Sad, but never disappointing. A real eyeopener to the plight of Norway during occupation.

This book was on my sons summer reading list. He really liked the book. He has always enjoyed history and the occasional illustration made the story all the more interesting.

The book arrived in a timely manner. Very good shape, as stated. Good reading.

It's hard to think of this book aimed at young readers. While there are no graphic photographs in this book, some of the text describing what Nazis did to captured Norwegians may be too harsh for young minds. I'd rather classify this book aimed for more mature readers who want a cursory look at Norway's part in the war effort and its band of resistance fighters in the Milorg, or who want to know why the Vemork power plant was important. Neal Bascomb explains why the plant was important. He also profiles the physicists working there, explains Norway's relationship to England at the time, gives basic descriptions of "heavy water" and nuclear fission, mentions the German physicists fascinated in atomic power. He also profiles the Norwegian heroes of this story, all while avoiding deep military strategy which can bore readers.Bascomb shows all of the above in a mere 259 pages. The efforts of the saboteurs were invaluable. He also adds some historical perspective of the 1930s and the efforts of several physicists around the world experimenting with atoms, neutrons and protons.Bascomb begins by introducing the brave Norwegians who are part of this story: 37-year-old Norwegian Institute of Technology professor Leif Tronstad and 28-year-old professor Kurt Haukelid who were trained in England and Scottland, and members of the Norwegian Independent Company who participated in Operation Grouse/Freshman: 23-year-old Norsk Hydro worker Einar Skinnarland, JensAnton Poulsson, Arne Kjelstrup, Knut Haugland, Claus Helberg. The reading here is intense and thrilling as the men brave freezing lakes, harsh temperatures, night time operations and never knowing if Germans were listening in on their radio frequencies. Many of of the English working with the Norwegians on the airlift didn't survive the ordeal when two planes crashed and survivors were rounded up by Nazis and executed. It took several attempts to make a successful landing and travel on skis to Vemork and beyond, always with the mission of making the Nazis' efforts more tiresome. It's no wonder Norwegians are some of the best winter athletes.The text is easy to read. There are plenty of black-white photographs that add imagery to the narrative, and everything is presented chronologically. The chapters are short and the narrative is straight reporting without any emotive prose. The end results is a summary of the courageous efforts of the Norwegians and English citizens to unite against an enemy. A highly recommended read for novices of military history.

Neal Bascomb has written an excellent account of one of the most persistent, daring and underappreciated missions of World War 2 - the effort to destroy a chemical plant at Vemork in Norway which was producing heavy water for the Nazis' atomic bomb effort. The book is aimed at young adults but it will be equally intriguing for readers of all ages. The writing is crisp and Bascomb is adept at conveying the tension intrinsic in the whole story.The book mainly shines in three ways. Firstly Bascomb gives us a good background of why the mission was undertaken. He traces the beginnings of the Nazi atomic bomb effort and introduces brilliant scientists like Werner Heisenberg as well as bureaucrats like Kurt Diebner and Albert Speer. The proof of principle in making an atomic bomb is to first build a nuclear reactor. This is what the scientists needed the heavy water for. Bascomb also has capsule histories of parallel efforts toward the bomb pursued in Britain and the United States. Since fission was discovered in Germany and the country had no dearth of capable scientists it was assumed that the Nazis would try to build an atomic bomb; hence the motivation for destroying the heavy water plant. As it turned out the scientists received almost no support from the government and their progress toward a workable weapon was almost non-existent, but the Allies did not know this until 1944.Secondly and most importantly, the book shines in telling us the stories of the heroic Norwegian saboteurs, scientists and soldiers who were trained in England and who along with help from the British made no less than three attempts to sabotage the plant. The first ended in disaster, the second was successful although the plant was rebuilt, and the third finally doomed its precious cargo to the depths of Lake Mana. Foremost among the heroes of the missions were chemist Lief Tronstad and officer Knut Haukelid. Tronstad, Haukelid and their fellow saboteurs were infused with a deep love for their country and a hatred of the Nazis. Although they did not know what exactly the heavy water was going to be used for, the fact that it was important to the Nazis for building a potentially destructive weapon was enough to urge them to action. Bascomb gives us exciting and lively accounts of the dangerous campaigns undertaken by these men. Some of these are literally minute by minute descriptions of how the saboteurs made their way through the inhospitable winter terrain and icy cliffs of Vemork, how they overcame resistance from guards, how they planted their bombs, and how they often narrowly escaped capture and death.Lastly the book is enlivened with dozens of lively and intriguing photos of key personnel, treacherous terrain, German troops, life under the occupation and aerial shots. These photos add urgent meaning and drama to the ongoing narrative. The photos will especially ensure interest from younger readers.Overall this is an excellent introduction to a heroic and underappreciated mission in World War 2. It will be of interest to budding history enthusiasts and simply to anyone who likes reading about adventure and intrigue. It will be a worthy addition to high school and public libraries.

What a great reference book. I love it for the typography.

I don't say this lightly, but this book was amazing in so many ways. Being broken from the loss of Hadassah, Marcus journeys to Galilee to try to find some answers about her. She had told him that she heard God’s voice in the wind, but try as he might, he can’t. With a set of unexpected events, however, Marcus begins to understand, but he’s not sure he’ll ever understand why Hadassah was taken from him when he loved her so or be able to forgive his sister for her life choices or killing his dream. But things are not always as they seem, and God still works miracles in the lives of his children.The cover of this one looks exactly like I pictured Marcus. (The cover that is appearing for my review is not the one on the book or audio I had.) Again, I found the research impressive, and the story riveting. The head-hopping continued, and I noticed a few mispronounced words. “Julius,” the male slave, also sounded too much like “Julia,” Marcus’s sister, most of the time. I loved how this one ended, but the last part, where it just told about what happened to the family, should have been worked into story form and not just recounted.

This is the second book in a series and with the teaser at the end of the first book, you can't help but want to read the second. The main characters from the first book are still there (those that survived) and the addition of new characters only serves to give you more characters to care about.Francine Rivers does not follow all the rules of Christian fiction... and in not doing so, her work is fascinating, makes you think about what kind of person you are or could be, and gives you hope.You'll want to forego sleep reading this one.

My pastor loaned the 1st book in this trilogy to me, and after about 20 pages of it, I ordered the remaining 2 books from Amazon. I've never read anything so in depth with how I imagine events actually took place in that era, as well as the emotional upheaval that these characters experienced. I could find nothing wrong with the historical flow either. I can hardly wait to read the last one.

I often buy books for my wife, who is an avid reader. This book came well recommended by other reviewers so I bought the series. After reading the book, my wife insisted that I read it also. While it is my opinion that these books are written for women, I was surprised at how good of a read it was. I have never been a big fan of Christian fiction, mostly because the characters never seemed real to me. Even the sinners in the books had high moral standards that didn't fit the character. As an example, the pilot and the flight attendant in the first Left Behind book had been involved for months, but had never been intimate. It didn't seem real in the book or the movie. Ms Rivers paints characters with real human feelings, desires, weaknesses as well as strengths. The sinners engage in sinful acts, but without the lurid details of common fiction. There is action, violence and blood in the book that paints the people of Rome as history has shown them to be.

I really liked all three books of the series, but this was my favorite. An amazing story, well told, without the at times difficult to take brutal violence of the first book. Loved the characters and how things unfolded - just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I will look forward to reading it again. Her books do such a great job of conveying the power of the Christian way.

It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author. Holding to your belief when you know the outcome is not favorable for you. Many Christians faced death in the arenaif they did not denounce God. One story is about a young woman whose father preached and was killed by his own for their lack of belief. Her mom and sister later died of starvation, her brother was murdered by Roman soldiers and she was sold into slavery. She was a living witness of her life but if she verbally acknowledged herself as a Christian she could be sent to the arena. Finally, the young girl she attended was jealous of the relationship her brother had with the servant and had her sent to the arena where she separated herself from the crowd, was devoured by the lions yet she survived and became a greater witness or its the story of a young woman whose baby died young and a Roman a young Roman mother whose rejection of her child was a blessing for the grieving mother. The father who previously rejected thebaby too now wants claim. Its about the journey she takes as the child's mom with the father as they all become Christians.
