#8,536 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Looking back on the last 50 years of my life, one of best things that ever happened to me was my wife's uncle telling me to buy and read this book. That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.

I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.

I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!

I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.

Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!So get the book, but not this version!!!

First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. For my adult life I struggled with $, debt, bills, etc. While the info contained within this book certainly is no secret, the story spoke to me in a way that nothing else had. Maybe it was the context, language, or the historical time tested theory, I'm not sure but whatever it was, it resonated.I started reading this book a few years ago in a hotel room on Christmas eve.Something about the stories, lessons, and history really spoke to me. I made a commitment and the following year saw me get out of the hamster wheel of debt that I'd been running in since I was 18.... And establish a respectable savings. Some won't appreciate the stories, some may dismiss the lessons as "common sense" (despite the fact that they aren't applying them and are broke.)Other stories, lessons, formats, may speak better to you.... That's fine. But for me,This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.

3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.

This book should be on the summer reading list for every school. I read this when I was younger, and again recently. I read it to my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes a narrative like this is what people need to really understand things. For example, I could say "use money to acquire assets that will make more money, not liabilities or things that just depreciate." But that's just one sentence, and we might all soon forget it. When you take a set of concepts and put it into a story, it gives people a scaffold to hang their understanding on. That's what this book is. It's been around forever, and it is still highly recommended, and there is a good reason for that.As for this edition, I found it to be fine. I wanted the original text, and this met the criteria.

#26,536 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I thought it was going to be a written story, but it was a cartoon, Manga I think it's called. It was a waste of my money.

I usually love Christine Feehan's Dark series books, and this book started off so well. I thought the introduction of another species was excellent. But in the end, I was disappointed by this one for two main reasons:1. The threat of the master vampire just evaporated. Ms. Graham did mention that he would go to ground for a few days, but he should have returned to 'finish' his plan. Certainly in the other books the vampires were more single-minded, so this seemed unlikely that he just conveniently disappeared.2. My annoyance with this book mostly came from the overly abrupt ending. It was more about the sex between the two main characters, rather than focusing on the merging of two species - how did the two main characters deal with resolving the differences between their two families; how did Juliette deal with her new nutritional requirements, sleeping patterns, sleeping in the earth, etc. Instead the climactic event was way too early and everything was resolved with a sex scene.Unsatisfactory. But... I love the series, so I'll assume that this was an aberration and move on to the next in the series.

I loved Riordan and Juliette's story Dark Hunger. When I first read this graphic book/ Manga back in 2007: which is debatable to some reviewers. I had mixed feelings becasue I didn't know what to expect. However, I loved the Carpathians and Riordan De La Cruz's character is right on the mark. Who doesn't love a Da Le Cruz!! Juliette made the perfect LifeMate. She is intelligent, beautiful, strong, brave and compassionate. Riordan is a De La Cruz what more is there to say, Tall, Dark, handsome and sexy. Riordan like all Carpathian males have tons of paranormal abilities. Fans of the Dark series will know exactly what I mean. It didn't bother me that it was graphic novel or Manga what every you choice to call it. It was a very good fast paced Adrenalin rush. The romance between Riordan and Juliette was very sensuous and romantic. Juliette you lucky girl snagged yourself a Da Le Cruz!!

i was extremely disappointed to get this book as it is in comic book version. I am an avid reader of Feehan's books and I never (and I mean never) would have purchased this book if I had known that it was in comic book form. I will skip over reading this one in the series (I have ordered nearly all 30 of them and hope the gap in following the characters won't matter much. BEWARE IF YOU ARE READING THIS SERIES AND DON'T WANT A COMIC BOOK VERSION OF DARK HUNGER, DON'T GET THIS!!!!

Obviously the more tortured, the less heroic, or so Juliette thought after rescuing Riordan De La Cruz. She just wasn't prepared for him. This is a short story that takes us to South America and the Amazon. It introduces the jaguar people and sets the foundation for subsequent books in the series with the remaining four brothers, Zacarias (Dark Predator), Rafael (Dark Secret), Manolito (Dark Possession), Nicholas (Dark Curse), and Juliette's cousin, Solange (Dark Peril). The stories of Zacarias, Manolito, and Solange take place in South America, Rafael's in the US, and Nicholas travels back to the Carpathian Mountains to meet his lifemate on what he has decided will be his last night on earth. To a certain extent, Dark Storm (Dax & Riley) could also be considered as part of this continuing storyline in that Jasmine, Juliette, and Riordan are also characters in that book as well as Jubal Sanders and Gary Jensen.Though not a full-fledged novel, it is necessary to the developing story-line. Not the best Feehan offering, but not the worst either.

I really enjoyed reading this graphic novel/Manga depiction of one of my favorite Carpathian novels, Dark Hunger. It was great to see a Carpathian male and his lifemate in action. We also get to see Juliette's jaguar, as well as Solange's, as there is a lot of shapeshifting going on in this book. And of course cute little Jasmine is in it, too. (Who will be her lifemate one day, I wonder?)I'm kind of chuckling over all the negative reviewers who bought the book, not realizing it is a GRAPHIC NOVEL/MANGA novel. HELLO! Duh! You can tell just by looking at the cover that it's a graphic novel. It was very clear to me that this is a graphic novel (or comic book, for those of you who aren't up to speed on graphic novels). I'm just amazed by the number of people who didn't realize that.I highly recommend this graphic novel to all Carpathian fans. It's wonderful to see a visual depiction of the Carpathian gifts, of Riordan sleeping in the earth, of Riordan and Juliette taking to the skies, of Riordan taking Juliette's blood, and slashing his chest for her to take his blood, of a vampire attack, and jaguar attack. It was just really nice to see these things portrayed visually for a change. The artwork and action are really well done. I like how they showed Riordan communicating with Juliette over distances with their mental link. And for you parents, you should know that this graphic novel is rated PG, so teens can read it. My 11-year-old daughter loves graphic novels, and there's nothing in here that she couldn't read or see.The other thing I think I should mention is that the entire book is in black and white - there is no color. I realize that was probably done for economic reasons. But wouldn't it have been amazing if, once Riordan got his colors and emotions back after meeting Juliette, that they had switched from black-and-white to color, to represent the fact that Riordan got his colors back. That would have been really cool. I liked when Riordan referred to his brothers, and there is an image of his brothers in there, although they don't actually show up in the story. If you like graphic novels and paranormal romance, or if you would like to see some Carpathian loving in action, you will enjoy this book.

This title is excellent. It has great step by step overviews of how to set up an environment for learning SSRS, and the exercises have all been thoughtfully assembled in an easy to download zip file. I found that I was able to quickly understand what I was doing easily. The text does not assume the reader is strong in SQL queries, but it does assume that you will either grasp the concepts quickly or be able to use the wizards to write targeted SQL queries. Knowledge is acquired by repeating the same actions a few times, then building on those conceptual ideas with new and fresh challenges in the material.I often find myself wishing that Microsoft Licensed VM images of its Windows OS and other projects for the sake of learning tools to avoid lengthy setups. Despite these challenges the setup of SQL Server and SSDT were very thoughtfully thought out with great step by step instructions aimed at a novice user. Overall I found the hardest challenge was knowing where to click on chart objects to find the right contextual chart menu. I found that if I clicked on the drop-down in "properties" to select an object I had a bit easier of a time. I also found that the SQL query syntax is just too small to read and is hard to code - These are all inherent issues in SSRS and Brian's book makes it a point to really learn these quirks and to see the code that should exist and to query accordingly. I'd recommend this title to anyone.

Bought this as I am new to SSRS, and was only the book I could find out there at the time. Read only about half of it, and then started playing on my own. Still use it from time to time as reference, and is always on my desk. Great thing to have if you are new to SSRS, and as I can see from websites, there is not much information out there for SSRS 2016 so this was a necessary purchase.

If you want to learn SQL Server Reporting Services then this book is hands down the best book to do that!!!!!!!! What I like most about this book is that he shows you how to do it with SSDT, Visual Studio, Report Designer, and Report Builder. Excellent book with easy to follow step by step instructions on how to create SSRS reports. All examples work. If you don't have this book for SSRS 2016 then you need it!!!

Truly an awesome book. Larson is an exceptional writer. If you want to learn SSRS or learn from a master, look no farther as this is your book. Larson will walk you through it all, using practical examples.

This book is a series of tutorials that explain and explore every facet of SSRS. The tutorials are easy to follow and taught me how to set up a report with all sorts of options.

Great for SQL Server BI folks!

I've updated my review after an initial frustration: The resource file for this book had yet to be made available by the publisher... BUT the AUTHOR stepped in and STEPPED UP after reading my review here and worked with publisher to make the materials available. I am a 3rd of the way through the book and find it the best SSRS book (have been through 3 and a user of SSRS since its inception. I bought the book to refresh my knowledge and introduce me to NEW features of SSRS for 2016. I have not gotten to the new feature examples yet so I cannot comment on those. the author does a good job of providing examples for for both SSDT/VS IDE or the Report builder suite. I use Visual Studio but read the RB suite tips also as I use that suite in a production integrated SharePoint environment. ..

Practical and useful

My mother use to tell me to read the Book of Enoch all the time but I never listened to her. She was well read, overly intelligent to the point where no one really could talk to her about the BIble or the history except Cardinals which really didn't talk about the Book of Enoch but knew of it. My mother was diagnosed with cancer, it was at the stage where nothing could be done which suited her. Her words were take me home! I told her I was working on it and she said to me not that home!!! I took her home she died two days later without hesitation or wonder of where she would be going. At this point of my life I wondered how can anyone be that sure? she wasn't a bible thumper, ( for the lack of a better saying) she was well read in a lot of history I was clueless to. In this moment in my life I decided to research and read her library of knowledge. I started with the book of Enoch. My eyes were open and so many things answered. I would recommend this book to all.

I give a 4 star because there is nothing wrong with this book. I didn't personally care for it because it is quotes of the book of Enoch and not the actual book. I felt misled by the title of the book. Maybe I misunderstood something in the discription!

Ahh, one of the hidden books of the Dead Sea Scroll finds. Left out by the Roman Catholic Church. Hummmm. Ya think there might be a reason for that.(?) Such as, ENOCH documents the reality of Genesis 6:4. And once a believer goes down the rabbit hole of GENESIS 6:4 ---look out ! You begin to marvel at " it's all REAL '. AND your inner core surprisingly becomes a magnet after more and more of the BIBLICAL untold. It becomes an incredible personal journey. GO for it !! You won't be disappointed.

Little complex but good information. Not for beginners and casual readers .Worth buying and should spend time

As a Sprirt lead Christian for over thirty year ,you think you know allot . You read this book and books from Pastor R.Morris and you don't know that much. There are gifts we receive with Yeweh's grace, but learning more and more makes us strong. This man, J. Pumpkin has wrote and anointed book here. Read and be Blessed open your heart and mind. Get ready!! Wow

The book of Enoch will not take you away from the bible but actually confirms it I dont know why they ever took it out of the bible it explains alot of questions people might have on Giants and the nephilim angels and stuff. also in this day and age could even explain what happens when we mess with DNA SERIOUSLY YOU NEED THIS BOOK

Great compilation of these lost scrolls; author has incorporated scripture from the Holy cannon to help tie things together and show how what Enoch says lines up with what we know to be true from God's Word. The second and 3rd book of Enoch, as the author points out are not accurate and different parts that do not line up. The first book of Enoch will help you understand the Watcher angels, what happened to them and who and what the Nephilim were, as well as explain where demons come from. It was astonishing and I could not put it down, for the most part of Enoch 1. It ties together with Jesus as the coming Messiah and backs what we are told in the book of Revelation. A good read and good price for those that want to learn more on the truth.

very interesting...Disciples quoted from the book, yet the "church" deemed the book to controversial to include it in the modern bible of today (700AD) or maybe later, kinda forget dates....Anyways for the people that want to learn and understand and have knowledge, it's a book to add to your library

Winner of the 2012 Fifty Books/Fifty Covers show, organized by Design Observer in association with AIGA and Designers & Books Winner of the 2014 Type Directors Club Communication Design Award Praise for Penguin Drop Caps: "[Penguin Drop Caps] convey a sense of nostalgia for the tactility and aesthetic power of a physical book and for a centuries-old tradition of beautiful lettering."--Fast Company "Vibrant, minimalist new typographic covers.... Bonus points for the heartening gender balance of the initial selections."--Maria Popova, Brain Pickings "The Penguin Drop Caps series is a great example of the power of design. Why buy these particular classics when there are less expensive, even free editions of Great Expectations? Because they're beautiful objects. Paul Buckley and Jessica Hische's fresh approach to the literary classics reduces the design down to typography and color. Each cover is foil-stamped with a cleverly illustrated letterform that reveals an element of the story. Jane Austen's A (Pride and Prejudice) is formed by opulent peacock feathers and Charlotte Bronte's B (Jane Eyre) is surrounded by flames. The complete set forms a rainbow spectrum prettier than anything else on your bookshelf."--Rex Bonomelli, The New York Times "Drool-inducing."--Flavorwire "Classic reads in stunning covers--your book club will be dying."--Redbook

About the Author

In the 1960s, especially in the United States, the novels of Hermann Hesse were widely embraced by young readers who found in his protagonists a reflection of their own search for meaning in a troubled world. Hesse’s rich allusions to world mythologies, especially those of Asia, and his persistent theme of the individual striving for integrity in opposition to received opinions and mass culture appealed to a generation in upheaval and in search of renewed values.Born in southern Germany in 1877, Hesse came from a family of missionaries, scholars, and writers with strong ties to India. This early exposure to the philosophies and religions of Asia—filtered and interpreted by thinkers thoroughly steeped in the intellectual traditions and currents of modern Europe—provided Hesse with some of the most pervasive elements in his short stories and novels, especially Siddhartha (1922) and Journey to the East (1932).Hesse concentrated on writing poetry as a young man, but his first successful book was a novel,Peter Camenzind (1904). The income it brought permitted him to settle with his wife in rural Switzerland and write full-time. By the start of World War I in 1914, Hesse had produced several more novels and had begun to write the considerable number of book reviews and articles that made him a strong influence on the literary culture of his time.During the war, Hesse was actively involved in relief efforts. Depression, criticism for his pacifist views, and a series of personal crises—combined with what he referred to as the “war psychosis” of his times—led Hesse to undergo psychoanalysis with J. B. Lang, a student of Carl Jung. Out of these years came Demian (1919), a novel whose main character is torn between the orderliness of bourgeois existence and the turbulent and enticing world of sensual experience. This dichotomy is prominent in Hesse’s subsequent novels, including Siddhartha (1922), Steppenwolf (1927), and Narcissus and Goldmund (1930). Hesse worked on his magnum opus, The Glass Bead Game (1943), for twelve years. This novel was specifically cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. Hesse died at his home in Switzerland in 1962.Calling his life a series of “crises and new beginnings,” Hesse clearly saw his writing as a direct reflection of his personal development and his protagonists as representing stages in his own evolution. In the 1950s, Hesse described the dominant theme of his work: “From Camenzind to Steppenwolf and Josef Knecht [protagonist of The Glass Bead Game], they can all be interpreted as a defense (sometimes also as an SOS) of the personality, of the individual self.” Joachim Neugroschel has won three PEN translation awards and the French-American translation prize. He has also translated Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs, both for Penguin Classics. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.Ralph Freedman, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, is acclaimed for his biographies Hermann Hesse: Pilgrim of Crisis, and Life of a Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke

If only this Kindle Edition preserved the translation enjoyed in print edition, it would be a wonderful read. But, it has been badly conveyed with phrasing that destroys much of the beauty of this classic work. An excellent author's turn of phrase, is preserved by an accomplished translator; this 'rendition' does not improve the text by its use of English simplifications and re-phrasings of the original literature. It is a disservice to anyone whom thinks they are reading Hesse.Object lesson: you get what you pay for -- I wish I'd gotten the (Buddha cover art) version, that appears to be same as paperback I've well read for decades: that superior version is also available as Kindle Edition, by Hermann Hesse (Author), Hilda Rosner (Translator). Next time I'll compare 'sample' with a known edition to avoid spending even very little money on something with damaged literary quality.Siddhartha

I just finished reading Siddhartha, and I can safely say without a shadow of a doubt, that it is now my favourite book. It's simply amazing that this was published in 1922, it is a timeless breath of simplicity and creativity. Herman Hesse was known for writing semi autobiographical novels, and this one is no exception; the character Siddhartha is even recognised for his writing ability at one stage of the novel. Siddhartha is heavily influenced by Hesse's close relationship with the great Swisse psychologist Carl Jung, and it is a treat to experience the archetypal imagery that Hesse manages to bring to life with sheer mastery. The novel reads like an old mythic tale, told with simple descriptive prose, and playful dialogue: the characters even refer to themselves in the third person! While reading Siddhartha, I couldn't help but picture the novel's world as being hand drawn, like the old drawings of the Buddha and the Hindu and Buddhist mythologies of old. The book is divided into three parts, which symbolically follow Siddhartha's birth, death, and rebirth. The Siddhartha in the novel is not related to the Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), but he exists in the same time as him, and the two cross paths in the book. Even though they are unrelated, and the story hasn't much to do with the Buddha, the novel implies that the Buddha exists everywhere and in everyone and is merely a representation of the enlightenment available to anyone, at any moment. Whether it be at the moment of physical death, sickness, wealth, sadness, or simply holding and looking at a rock, one is capable of `waking up' and seeing the inter connectedness of everything.I won't elaborate any further on the book, I would hate to subtract any of your enjoyment out of reading it yourself, and if you haven't, I urge you to. One important thing to consider before reading it however, (it is a fairly short read - roughly 80 pages) is the translation. The original was written in German, so the translation of the book can make or break it. Some translations are really poor, while others capture the essence of the novel beautifully and gracefully, like a net catches a butterfly before releasing it into the wind. Below is a extract of the book, spanning all (or at least most) of the English translations available to you, to help you choose the right version for you. I've ordered them in order of best to worst, though you might have a different opinion to me.SIDDHARTHA ENGLISH TRANSLATION COMPARISON:Dover Thrift, introduction, translation and glossary of Indian terms by Stanley Appelbaum (1998)Instructed by the samana elder, Siddhartha practiced denial of self; he practiced concentration in accordance with new samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest - and Siddhartha absorbed the heron into his soul; he flew over forest and mountain, he was the heron, he ate fish, he hungered with a heron's hunger, he spoke with a heron's croaking, he died a heron's death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy riverbank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the carcass; he was a dead jackal, he lay on the sand, he swelled up, stank, rotted, was torn apart by hyenas, was skinned by vultures, became a skeleton, turned to dust, blew away into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned; it had died, it had rotted, it had fallen into dust, it had tasted the dismal intoxication of the cycle of existences; filled with fresh thirst, like a hunter it was awaiting the gap through which it might escape the cycle, where causation would come to an end, where sorrowless eternity began. He mortified his senses, he mortified his power to remember, he stole out of his ego and into a thousand unfamiliar forms of creation; he was an animal, he was a carcass, he was stone, he was wood, he was water, and each time, upon awakening, he found himself again; the sun or the moon was shining; he was himself once again, he was moving through the cycle; he felt thirst, overcame his thirst, felt fresh thirst.Modern Library, a translation by Susan Bernofsky, foreword by Tom Robbins, translator's preface (2006)Instructed by the eldest of the Samanas, Siddhartha practiced the eradication of ego, practiced samadhi according to new Samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha received the heron into his soul, flew over forests and mountains, was heron, ate fish, felt the pangs of heron hunger, spoke in heron squawks, died heron death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the corpse, was dead jackal, lay on the beach, grew bloated, stank, decayed, was torn apart by hyenas and flayed by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, blew into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned, it had died, had decayed, become dust, it had tasted the bleak euphoria of the cyclical journey, and then, freshly thirsty, it waited crouching like a hunter for the gap in the cycle where escape was possible, where the end of causality began, an eternity free of sorrow. He killed off his senses, he killed off his memory, he slipped from his Self to enter a thousand new shapes, was animal, was cadaver, was stone, was wood, was water, and each time he awakened he found himself once more, the sun would be shining, or else the moon, and he was once more a Self oscillating in the cycle, he felt thirst, overcame the thirst, felt new thirst.Shambhala Classics, a translation by Sherab Chödzin Kohn, introduction by Paul W. Morris, translator's preface (1998).Taught by the eldest shramana, Siddhartha practiced self-abnegation, practiced meditative absorption according to the new instructions of the shramanas. A heron flew over the bamboo grove, and Siddhartha became one with the heron in his mind, flew over forest and mountain, became a heron, ate fish, hungered with a heron's hunger, spoke a heron's croaking languages, died a heron's death. There was a dead jackal lying on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's mind slipped into the carcass, became a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled up, stank, rotted, was torn to pieces by hyenas, flayed by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, blew about in the fields. And Siddhartha's mind returned, dead, rotten, reduced to dust, having tasted the dark drunkenness of the cycle of existence. With a new craving it lay in wait like a hunter for the gap where that cycle could be escaped, where the end of causation could begin, eternity without suffering. He slipped out of his ego into a thousand alien forms, became a beast, carrion, became stone, wood, water--yet each time when he awoke he found himself there again. By sunshine or by moonlight, he was once again ego, was pressed back into the cycle, felt craving, overcame the craving, felt craving anew.Bantam Books, a translation by Hilda Rosner (1951). This translation is also available in a number of different editions from other publishers.Instructed by the eldest of the Samanas, Siddhartha practiced self-denial and meditation according to the Samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo wood and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over forest and mountains, became a heron, ate fishes, suffered heron hunger, used heron language, died a heron's death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy shore and Siddhartha's soul slipped into its corpse; he became a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled, stank, decayed, was dismembered by hyenas, was picked at by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, mingled with the atmosphere. And Siddhartha's soul returned, died, decayed, turned into dust, experienced the troubled course of the life cycle. He waited with new thirst like a hunter at a chasm where the life cycle ends, where there is an end to causes, where painless eternity begins. He killed his senses, he killed his memory, he slipped out of his Self in a thousand different forms. He was animal, carcass, stone, wood, water, and each time he reawakened. The sun or moon shone, he was again Self, swung into the life cycle, felt thirst, conquered thirst, felt new thirst.Penguin, a translation by Joachim Neugroschel, introduction by Ralph Freedman, translator's note (2002).Taught by the eldest of the samanas, Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over forests and mountains, was a heron, ate fish, hungered heron hunger, spoke heron croaking, died heron death. A dead jackal lay on the sandy bank, and Siddhartha's soul slipped into the cadaver, was a dead jackal, lay on the shore, swelled, stank, rotted, was shredded by hyenas, was skinned by vultures, became a skeleton, became dust, wafted into the fields. And Siddhartha's soul returned, was dead, was rotted, was dispersed, had tasted the dismal drunkenness of the cycle of life, waited in new thirst like a hunter, waited for the gap through which he could escape the cycle, where the end of causes came, where painless eternity began. He killed his senses, he killed his memory, he slipped from his ego into a thousand different formations. He was animal, was carcass, was rock, was wood, was water, and he always found himself again upon awakening. Sun was shining or moon, he was self again, swinging in the cycle, felt thirst, overcame thirst, felt new thirst.Barnes & Noble Classics, a translation by Rika Lesser, introduction and notes by Robert A.F. Thurman (2007)Instructed by the eldest of the shramanas, Siddhartha practiced moving away from the self, practiced meditation, following new rules, the shramanas' rules. A heron flew over the bamboo forest--and Siddhartha took the heron into his soul, flew over the forest and the mountains, was the heron, gobbled fish, hungered as a heron hungers, spoke heron croak, died the death of a heron. A dead jackal lay on the sandy shore, and Siddhartha's soul slid inside its corpse, became the dead jackal, lay on the strand, swelled up, stank, putrefied, was dismembered by the hyenas, skinned by vultures, became bones, dust, blew in open country. And Siddhartha's soul died, decayed, turned to dust, tasted the muddy rush of the cycle, waiting in new thirst like a hunter for the gap where the cycle would be escaped, where the end of causes, where eternity free of suffering would begin. He mortified his senses, he slew his memory, he slid out of his I into a thousand alien shapes, became beast, carrion, stone, wood, water, and found himself every time awakening again, in the light of the sun or the moon, again he was I, whirling around in the round, he felt thirst, conquered thirst, felt thirst anew.

Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha is an absolutely amazing and engrossing tale of one man’s journey to find that all-elusive idea of enlightenment. The book’s title may suggest that it is simply a story that would have value only for people of the Buddhist persuasion, but this simply is not true. The work is well written and thought out, and it does a terrific job of showing us as human beings that often times what we are looking for is with us all along.Hesse’s book follows a young man named Siddhartha on his journey to find the true meaning of life and peace. The young man leaves his family of Brahman priests believing that they have spiritually achieved all that they ever will, and embarks with his friend Govinda down the path of a contemplative and restrictive existence. The young man soon realizes that these religious men (Samanas) also are lacking, to Siddhartha, what the path to true enlightenment really is. He continues on his journey coming by entering the company of the real Buddha—Gatama, but soon comes into contradictions with the Buddha’s teaching of removing oneself from the world. This leaves the man frustrated and lost, and eschews him down another path that is quite opposite of the one he originally intended to take.Siddhartha has now become rather restless with his pursuit of happiness, so he soon discards it for one of sexuality, greed and total reliance on the flesh. He falls in love with Kamala—a beautiful courtesan woman—and embraces the life of a merchant that furthers his greed and lustful desires. Siddhartha and Kamala conceive a son soon after their affair, but after a dream leaves Siddhartha puzzled, he becomes bored and sickened by his lust and greed, and decides to move on to find his enlightened path. With total despair encompassing his heart and soul, Siddhartha comes to a river where he soon hears a unique sound that will change his life forever. This sound signals the true beginning of his new and fulfilled life--the beginning of earthly suffering, human rejection and inner peace, and, finally, ultimate wisdom and enlightenment. The book is a harrowing tale of man’s lust for greed, power, sex and material gain; however, its ultimate purpose is to show that often times what we are looking for is in the simplest places imaginable. Hesse’s work craftily explains (through Buddhist and Hindu philosophies) that life is an all-encompassing journey that will eventually show all mankind what it is looking for. We suffer and struggle mightily through banal everyday tasks, but perhaps this daily grind of being in a symbiotic relationship with other life is what inner peace really is.

About the Author

Greg Howard grew up near the coast of South Carolina, or as he fondly refers to it, “the armpit of the American South.” By the time he could afford professional therapy and medication, the damage had already been done. His hometown of Georgetown, South Carolina is known as the “Ghost Capital of the South,” (seriously…there’s a sign), and was always a great source of material for his overactive imagination. Raised in a staunchly religious home, Greg escaped into the arts: singing, playing piano, acting, writing songs, and making up stories. After running away to the bright lights and big city of Nashville, Tennessee with stars in his eyes and dreams of being the Dianne Warren of Music City, he took a job peddling CDs and has been a cog in the music business machine ever since. Now an adult with a brain, Greg finds the South Carolina coast to be a perfectly magical place where he vacations yearly and dreams of the day when he can return to write full time in the most tastefully decorated beach house on Pawleys Island. Currently, Greg resides in Nashville, TN with his husband, Steve, and their three rescued fur babies. Molly, Toby, and Riley.

“Evil is a relative term. Not all darkness is evil.”Greg Howard, a southern boy, apologizes to his small-town South Carolina roots by setting this action-packed vampire romance in the middle of it. This was really good. The writing is crisp, the story is engaging and well-paced, the characters are, given the level of fantasy here, believable and well rounded. Even the dead ones.Cooper Causey is a smart, pretty redhead. He’s going to grad school in Nashville and hooking up a lot. None of this seems unusual, at first, until we realize that Cooper’s keeping the world at an emotional distance with his behavior because of something terrifying that happened to him as a boy back in Georgetown, South Carolina. There is all the high-drama of a classic bodice-ripper here, spiced up with a fascinating twist on vampires with biblical overtones. The frightening afternoon adventure at Warfield Plantation is not the only thing keeping Cooper away from Georgetown. Teenage crushes and public humiliation lie in his past as well, and when Cooper rushes to his hometown to find out what has happened to his grandmother, he has to confront the men who once were his best friends.Cooper is kind of a jerk, and following his redemption as an emotionally mature human being is a story line that runs parallel to Cooper’s discovery of just how abnormal he really is. Folklore, long-standing family deceptions, and a threat to humanity itself lie hidden within the borders of the plantation where his childhood terrors were first given form. It is a breath-taking journey of discovery and acceptance.Greg Howard clearly has a sequel in mind. I hope he’s working on it now, because I’ll look forward to reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Filled with supernatural suspense, it reminded me of the early Anne Rice novels. I thought the main characters were interesting and I wanted them to succeed. With a background story, I had never heard of before it was a fresh take the genre. I hope there will be a sequel soon to see what happens next.

I loved this book and I love Cooper :) In fact, every character in this book is special. Howard is a wonderful writer. I highly suggest BLOOD DIVINE to those who appreciate a well-woven story with southern charm, various paranormal elements, adventure, and a sweet romance. Fans of True Blood will devour this book!

As the story opens, "20 years ago”, and the main character rides his bike down the long road of the abandoned, creepy plantation that is not so abandoned after all. I was hooked. The story scared me deep in my bones, touched my soul, and invited me to open my heart. Blood Divine is a memorable work where the characters lingers long after the story ends.It reads like classic paranormal/fantasy with a hint of romance and it's impossible to put it down. Blood Divine is an impressive first novel however you approach the story. Written with stunning originality and constructed with witty prose, Blood Divine is the novel we have been waiting for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I kept thinking I knew how it was going to end but did not expect what happened. I loved the characters and how the mythology was developed.

(Sadly) I finished Blood Divine this morning at 5:23. 11 hours later, I've yet to find adequate words to express how in love with this book and all of the characters... yes, all... I am. Ok, well, maybe not the, oh, I don't want to give anything away! Incredibly well written, completely new take on a very difficult subject(s) to undertake after the many, many attempts by others. A breath of fresh air. Anytime a book has me crying one minute and literally laughing out loud the next and wide-eyed in anticipation the whole way through... Bravo, Greg Howard! Bravo!!!!

Get this book! You will love it! The author is a childhood friend of mine and I am VERY proud of him! Ready to start reading his second novel!

Part ghost story, part vampire-lore, part Biblical mythology, with a healthy dose of Southern sass and charm mixed in for good measure. The cast of characters is vast, diverse, and fascinating, but the central and epic story never got lost. The setting descriptions are vivid and lush, especially if you're familiar with this part of the country. Bring on the sequel!!
