I'm afraid I have to say this is a subpar outing in Archer's "NightTerror" series. When we last saw techno-villain Night Terror & her superherogirlfriend Fialux, the former had finally defeated a plague of giantirradiated lizards unleashed on Starlight City, while Fialux (inher first POV segment) had apparently been transported to the planetfrom whence the mutating radiation came. This book opens with Night Terror desperately seeking the coordinatesto that world... by chasing cats possessed by brain parasites whichapparently crossed over from that world with the radiation. As youmight expect, this leads to many "Oh, she is rescuing the cutekitties" moments from the Starlight citizenry, which does nothingfor Night Terror's villainous rep, or her temper. She can't askDr. Lana, the one woman who would probably know the actual coordinates, because she killed her in a fit of absence of mind. Finally, whenall is almost lost, we get a big reveal, and the suggestion thatwe may finally continue that long awaited Fialux POV after all. This book was a mess. The chase after the mind parasites (despitesome Wrath of Khan business) went on *way* too long, and was marredby stupid mistake after stupid mistake on Night Terror's part.Like, time after time killing them instead of interrogating them, and even forgetting she could fly! The old:========= "Boss, I have important information!" "Not now, can't you see I'm busy!?" "But Boss..." "Shut up!"============routine was also deployed too many times. And finally: Killing Dr.Lana (offscreen!) because she was too engrossed in a video game tomonitor her torture regimen?Luckily, it looks like the next book will offer a basic inversionof the series concept, which could be fresh and funny.
A villain constantly forced into being a hero, who constantly references scifi pop culture, an army of possessed cats trying to take over the world. What more could you ask for. Except the next book as soon as possible.
Don't be put off by the supposed "lesbian romance" angle in the books' description, any sex is discretely off camera, and what these are is a top notch superhero series with a fascinating protagonist. I love the narrator's constant references to old time science fiction films and TV shows. I read all four books in 3 days.
It is a well crafted follow up to the previous 3 books and I am looking forward to the next with bated breath. Trying to avoid spoilers but if you have read the first three this is great. I just hope we learned what happened to Fialux while trapped on an alien world.
Fourth in the series, and, in my opinion, funnier than the first three volumes. Highly recommend this series.
Night Terror is one of my favorite characters in any series by any author that I've read over the past few years. An anti-hero with a heart of gold, that she stole from a bank vault along with other items placed there by crooked politicians, crime bosses, and corrupt business men. LOL!In this story, we get to see how she deals with the one thing she never expected to face: the loss of the love of her life... Selena, better known to the world at large as Fialux, is gone. Thrust through a portal into a radioactive wasteland by her archnemesis, Dr. Lana, and, due to an unfortunate... accident... the bad doctor is no longer available to tell her the location that portal was pointed to, if Selena could even survive this long in that place... So... yeah... we're pretty much looking at a super-villain suffering from a bout of depression here.To make matters worse, something came the other way through that portal. A parasitic alien that infects cute, fluffy kitties and is trying to take over the planet! Only Night Terror can stop them, with the help of her evil supercomputer sidekick, CORVAC, with whom she recently reunited and came to an agreement to not try to kill each other anymore... at least for now. This volume of the series continues the trend of Night Terror being portrayed in a heroic light in the media, which is entirely the point of the title. It introduces a "new" character, or at least gives her a name: the news anchor, Nancy Norris, who was previously stated to be one of Natalie's former "Surviving a Heroic Intervention" students from her gig as a university professor and may just be too bright for her own good... or at least for Night Terror's.The action and intrigue aspect of this story is fantastic, with Night Terror and CORVAC going toe-to-paw with an enemy that is tougher than it appears at first glance. In a lot of ways, though, I felt that a lot of the story was about Natalie coming to grips with the potential loss of Selena. She misses things and makes mistakes. She is unfocused when she normally would be on point. In short, she's depressed. By the end of the story, she seems to have come around and is doing better... then...WOW! What an ending!!! I just CANNOT WAIT for the next book and the one after that!!!!!!I received an ARC copy of this book.
