I started reading this book as a reluctant reader, having so many books on my bucket list to read and never wanting to waste my time spending an hour reading something that doesn’t enrich, educate, inspire. Having a preconceived notion about any book I begin to read, this one was no different. Having said that, I’ll start by saying what this book is not: it’s not a casual read about the coming of age of women in a man’s world, or another tale of rags-to-riches. It’s not another story about someone behind the 8 ball who is given a second chance at life. This story will beggar your imagination in an attempt to wrap your mind around how a human being in the 20th century could possibly treat her children the way she did, and how those children could possibly withstand the deprivation and degradation that they were exposed to. I constantly had to remind myself that this was taking place in American and in and around the same neighborhoods I grew up in. I was literally brought to tears to see how these sisters and their brother continually elevated their sibling relationship by loving each other on increasing levels that made me realize what my own sibling relationships had entirely lacked. It revealed with clarity the importance of the teacher in our society, and the now almost extinct neighbor-to-neighbor relationship. If you are a teacher, you need to read this book to renew your acquaintance with the power you have in your sphere of influence. If you are a parent, your parenting will change for the better – no doubt. If you are a social worker, for god sakes, please read this book. In fact, my suggestion to any and all social work courses and degree programs – make this a mandatory read! The images that I have in my head from reading this book will never go away. This book has so many cogent lessons to teach, so many words of wisdom to inspire….in short, it will change the way you think about children, parents, government bureaucracies, school, neighbors, and the American culture in general.

I hate writing reviews. When I read what others have put I get angry when they tell me what the book is about. I know that already from reading what a back cover would say. Others tell me what the ending of the book is. That I really hate, there is no longer a reason for me to read the book.That being said I do feel compelled to leave a review of this book. Those of us who live in warm houses, cool houses in the summer, have our bellies full of food need to read this book. I think it is important to learn about another way of life that is happening to children in our society that we overlook or maybe hope doesn't exist at all. We need to know how they fall through the cracks so that changes can be made to stop and take a good look at abused and abandoned children and find a better system to help them.Books like this can read like a novel. I have to keep reminding myself this is REAL. This is someone's day to day existence. Someone's review said it was "too depressing to read". Considering what the book is about what were they expecting, lollipops and roses?I liked the book for it opened my eyes, it made me think and be grateful for the life (and childhood) that I have had. It told me of the powerful will to survive and the importance of family.I give immense kudos to the author for telling the story. The ending of the journey you will have read yourself!

This is the true story of how five children tried to band together to cover up the abuse of their mother, provide for their basic needs in a way that Social Services wouldn't become aware of and just be able to remain together so that they could protect one another.The story openly shows how the Social Services system fails children but how perserverence, some adults to provide foster care or just believe in your capabilities can enable you to succeed when everything is against you. You don't have to continue the cycle but it does take some caring individuals to help you find your way out. Some of the emotional scars can heal but others do seem to hang on to the point where the feeling might be scabbed over but you are always going to protect that area since you fear the scab could be ripped off so easily.As an educator, I have been frustrated by some of the responses that we receive from Social Services and I am very aware of the high needs, the lack of funding, and the small pay the workers get for trying to protect our most precious resource.Regina has written an eye opening, well written memoir which more people should put on their "to read" list.

This was a book that was hard to put down. Regina Calcaterra narrates the horror or growing up with her 4 siblings pretty much on their own on Long Island. Their mother was a drunk and mostly absent for months. The older kids would steal food just to stay alive. They were terrified of the "system" so they would lie about their mother being at work when the social worker would visit. When you read this book, your troubles will suddenly seem very small when you learn what it took for these children to stay safe and alive. Regina is now a very successful lawyer in New York, which is amazing after all she endured, many times being beaten so badly, verbally and mentally abused constantly. Full of suspense, shock, and wonder at how these children survived, this book is not something you will want to stop reading.

I am so thankful to you and your siblings, Regina Calcaterra! To read about the atrocities of your childhood, in the manner you penned them, brought a new awareness of just how many others there could be that are so painfully hurting at the hands of those who are supposed to love and care for them forever. I work in the public schools, and know that God placed me there so I too, can make a positive difference. This memoir will be ever etched in my heart as I keep my eyes, ears, and heart opened to every child I come in contact with.

Being retired, I'm slowly reading the classics (modern and ancient) I never got to until now. I read this cover-to-cover and it has its moments, but of course it's not a quick read. I'm advised that this is one of the better translations and can't confirm that, but I sure would not want to read a translation from a century ago. One thing that bothered me is that the extensive footnotes are in the back, and I did read them, but I needed two bookmarks and hundreds of times went back-and-forth. The technology exists to put them on the same page as the text they refer to and it would be a courtesy to the reader to place them there.

I've meant to tackle this beast since High school and have avoided doing so until this version. Tom Holland is a master, and brought this work to life for me.It's an important view of the world, many views of the world, from an ancient source, but always fresh and relevant.In so many ways so little has changed. From our love of tall tales to the causes of pointless warfare.Herodotus was not just the first historian he was also devotedly anthropological. And while he swallows a great many goofball ideas -- Cows that feed walking backwards because their horns are too large to allow them to walk forward! -- he is nonetheless a necessary study for any student of humanity or culture.Grab this copy even just for it's excellent cover art and how it will look on your shelf!

Saw it being sold at my school campus for $40, said nahhh and ordered on amazon. Kept google open on my iPad while I read this so that I could get a perspective of who what when where and that helped a lot - otherwise it’s historically accurate gossip that’s thousands of years old. I’m grateful that these texts could be so well translated good stuff for your brain.

I've read the Histories probably 4 or 5 times. This read is the most informative and interesting of them all. I love the copious footnotes and the normal English translation. I highly recommend this edition for the repeat or first time reader of the Histories.

I love how the histories allows you hear from another time. Places and events we know about with real people and accountings of those events. The author is very skilled and the writing style modern.

I am really enjoying this book. It is written in clear, sometimes ironic, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, always exciting prose. Also has some English spelling(!) which I enjoy.My brother got me interested in Ancient Greece. Started me off with the 'Battle of Salamis', which was great, then I found 'Song of Wrath', and now Herodotus. I have just got to the Battle of Thermopylae. After that will come Salamis, and then Xerxes will go home in defeat after one final battle. It seemed a life of perpetual choices: at any time My enemy is my enemy, My Friend is my enemy, My Family is my enemy. Trust no one, or very few.The way the various Greek cities lived, their constant conflicts, the quite amazing brutality of the time. The "time" is interesting too, having to keep it in perspective as one has to count backwards towards AD. Keeping all the kings straight is a bit difficult as their offspring were named after their fathers, with no I, II, III, etc. following the name. I must admit to skipping occasional paragraphs that contained just names.The maps (13 of them) are great. It was easy to trace Xerxes path of his military and his navy from beginning to end, a very long campaign to exterminate Athens. The list of maps helped a lot as it listed the map on which the individual cities appear. The first map on The 'World According to Herodotus' is fascinating. I compared it to a current atlas and it shows how much was known up to a point, then became just ocean. The Introduction is very interesting and useful as are all the other notes that make up the 834 pages.It reads like sitting down for story-telling time with an elderly relative. I recommend it highly.

This is not a complaint against the translation, but rather against the long dead author. My plan was to read the early Greeks to get a sense of history and historiography. Herodotus is filled with nonsense, counterfactual claims, and interventions of the gods. As such, there may be nuggets in this work, but lots of sieving required. The Landmark Edition is much better since the copious notes and explanatory essays help the reader undrstand what was real in Herodotus, and what is suspect or simply fabulist.

I'm a student in new york and we were assigned this book. The quick and dirty is that the book is somewhat long-winded and tough to follow, but gives a very detailed description of the teeth. Many new dental students will find that using the glut of new dental terminology like line angles, different types of ridges and just finding the orientation in space is hard. If you can get past this, the book is very helpful. Whats really helpful (and what most of our students use) is the tooth CD that comes with it. It is a series of cartoon picures that summarizes paragraph-long descriptions into something as easy as an arrow. Its just that easy. If you are fortunate to stumble across a PDF copy of the CD, use it. However, personally, I am very happy with purchasing the book because it also includes a number of flashcards in the back and it will no doubt be useful in studying for the boards. There it is. The book isnt THAT bad. Its just VERY descriptive.

This book has great resources such as the flash cards but I agree that the language is a bit difficult to understand. I prefer Woelfel's Dental Anatomy as the language is easier to understand and it has revision questions in a style similar to my course of study.

everything was in perfect condition. recieved it in time for class. seller has a good price compared to retail. happy with the purchase, unfortunately it wasn't essential to my class. I found it to be confusing and I didn't use it. Bird. Robinson : Modern Dental Assiting had this book summerized in better detail in a very clear and easy to understand way that made this book not necessary for anatomy class.

I like the Wheelers book for somethings. The pictures are great and have really great labels for all of the details. There are also blank flash cards so you can quiz yourself on the anatomy. However, the text can be very dense and difficult to understand the wording at times. There are also no quiz or review questions that would probably be helpful. Apparently though the people who make up the board exam use Wheelers to make their questions so I guess it's a catch 22?

I ordered a 10th edition copy of this book as the labeled in the description, instead I received a copy of the 1st South East Asia Edition...

A bit too much of the author's storytelling. I would prefer more hard facts. On the other hand, I am familiar with Jewish heritage and the story of the literature, so maybe for someone less familiar the introductory part would be more useful.

Mark Glickman has published his second book and this one is every bit as good as the first. “Stolen Words” is a well researched and well written historic account with lots of background and context. The main story line, in the back drop of WW II and the Holocaust, is not common knowledge; yet, it is important for its historical significance. While academically footnoted with source information (and a great index), the book takes on a more personal style of writing keeping the reader fully engaged. You can feel the passion Glickman has for telling this story. Highly recommend.

Just finished reading this wonderful book by Mark Glickman. It is a well-written and riveting account of the Nazi looting of Jewish libraries and private book collections throughout Europe. This book is a must read. So much has been written about the Holocaust, yet Rabbi Glickman adds a whole new chapter to what we know. He beautifully explains why the written word has played such a vital role to Jewish culture and history. He provides fascinating insights into Nazi Party bureaucracy and why it was so ideologically obsessed with hoarding Jewish books and manuscripts. And he tells engaging personal stories of those who managed Jewish libraries and academies before the War, and those with the daunting task after the War to redistribute uncountable millions of books throughout the US, Europe, the USSR, Israel.

This is not an easy book to describe, but it is a very good one, and parts of it are outstanding. The writing is excellent, the research seems thorough, and as a rabbi, Glickman has a heightened understanding of the importance of books, learning and religious texts to Judaism. The photos are helpful, although the book could use more. Here's a sample of his prose, which also describes the importance of study: "Personal moments of transcendence might be moving, but what really counts is what God said to the Jewish people collectively. And what God said to the Jewish people collectively is called Torah. To study Torah, therefore, is to study a thunderous moment of divine revelation, To study Torah is to hear the voice of God."The first half of the book is the best, describing the relationship of books to Jewish culture, and it has some fascinating detail about manuscripts, early printing in Hebrew, and how printing helped the standardization of texts, which in turned helped a sense of Jewishness in the widely dispersed communities making up the world of Judaism. Among other things, there's an excellent account of the early days of Hasidism. One outstanding feature is actually fiction, a fictional account of a visit to a real Jewish library in pre-war Vilna (the Strashun Library); sections of the visit mix with the first chapter. The fictional visit will have an impact on any reader, but if the reader loves books, he or she will be drawn deeply into Glickman's book.There's enlightening historical detail, placing the narrative in a consistently difficult social environment--burning Jewish books was nothing new; Pope Julius III in 1553 ordered burning all copies of the Talmud, resulting in a large pyre in Rome of thousands of books, effectively ending what had been a vibrant Jewish printing culture in Italy. Glickman also discusses censorship of Jewish books, in which censors inked out offending sections--one imagines generations of Jewish students holding the pages up to the light, trying to read the print under the inked-out sections.The German burnings of books achieved infamy and the photos still can shock a viewer, but Glickman makes the point that Nazis collected the books, many millions of books, many times the number burned. The massive thefts and the eventual discovery and settling who should get what are the core of this book.I found several chapters to be particularly good. Chapter 1, "Loading the Jewish Bookshelf" is borderline superb. Chapter 4 features an intriguing character sketch, at some length, of Alfred Rosenberg, "...arguably history's greatest pillager of printed words." Chapter 6. "Resistance," describes just that, incidents of resistance to Nazi looters, and it has a wonderful anecdote about a Muslim Bosnian scholar named Dervis Korkut, who saved the Sarajevo Haggadah. Chapter 8, "Restitution," describes the Offenbach Archival Depot, run by Americans, that collected millions of looted books and attempted to return them, with considerable success--but with thousands of the original book collectors murdered, and the extinction of hundreds of communities, who should they be returned to? That issue was complex and the resolution could not have pleased everyone.A literary device Glickman uses unites his narrative. Early on he describes opening a package of a book he bought online, a book printed in the 1700s, one of the millions looted by the Nazis and returned, that happened to be available on the market. At the end of the book, he takes the book to a day's session of a Jewish children's summer camp. He shows them the book, not knowing quite what to expect, and finds that they are fascinated. This may not seem like so much, but it is effective, emotional and established continuity between the vanished Jewish communities and the future of Judaism.
